In ballistics, the center of pressure is the point where all of the aerodynamic forces, particularly lift and drag, are equalized. If this point is behind or below the center of gravity, then the object is self-stabilizing. This is why fin stabilization works with missiles and similar military ordnance. Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Tugboats are needed to pull or push large ships in confined waters such as in a harbor area and docks, and they are also needed to tow large ships on long ocean voyages.... They are capable of firefighting and salvage duties and may carry large capacity pumps for these purposes. One important design characteristic of a tugboat is its hull form and propulsion system are designed both for a given free running speed and a high thrust at zero speed. Furthermore, its upper deck layout is dictated by the need to get close into a variety of vessels and by the need to keep the towing point above the longitudinal center of lateral pressure so that a lateral pull has a minimum effect on maneuverability. 6, record 3, English, - tugboat

Horizontal hydraulic fracturing is accomplished by drilling vertically to the depth of the shale formation, which is generally found between 0. 6 – 1. 5 km below the surface. When the gas-containing shale is intercepted, the drill bit is maneuvered to travel horizontally through the center of the formation for a distance of up to 1. 6km. Water, biocides, surfactants, sands, and other chemicals are forced into the borehole under extremely high pressure to induce fractures in the shale that allow gas to rise to the surface for collection... 1, record 7, English, - horizontal%20hydraulic%20fracturing

The new 60-megawatt segmented arc heater, known as H3, significantly improves AEDC' s [Arnold Engineering Development Center] present arc capabilities... Arc heaters such as H3 produce the high pressures and heat fluxes required for testing thermal protection materials used for nose tips and heat shields. Arc heater tests provide information to manufacturers about the probable condition a space vehicle component would experience following re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. An arc heater is basically a large tube that high-pressure air runs through. The air is heated by discharging tens of megawatts of power using an electric arc similar to a lightning bolt. At the nozzle, or downstream end of the heater, test personnel install models or materials and subject them to simulated high pressure and temperature conditions generated by the bolt. Temperatures range from 5, 000 to 15, 000 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring each component to be water-cooled. 2, record 19, English, - segmented%20arc%20heater

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants. 1, record 21, English, - porous%20irrigation%20tape

Highspeed, Highpressure Sewer and Pipe Cleaning. The vehicle is positioned at the manhole with hose reel above opening. A center hole in the nozzle breaks up accumulation in front of the hose to allow for easy passage. When the hose is withdrawn, the water jets flush the sewer clean. Light materials are flushed down the line and heavy materials are deposited in the manhole for easy removal with the sanitary Hydro-Vac. ... a spray gun includes a fluid adjustment which controls the fluid valve, a spreader adjustment valve, an air-valve assembly, an air cap, a fluid inlet, and an air inlet. The balance among air pressure, airflow, fluid pressure, and fluid flow is controlled by adjusting the valves concerned to provide the desired spray quality and pattern. Air flowing through the center area of the air cap and through holes near the center mixes with fluid from the fluid tip and produces an atomized spray. Air flowing from the openings in the horns of the air cap impinges on each side of the fluid spray to produce an elongated spray pattern. One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates above the center of the wheel, using two pivot points, one for each caliper arm. They are activated by means of a brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to a cable anchor. From the cable anchor a transverse cable runs to both sides of the brake assembly and attaches to the caliper arms. When the brake lever is squeezed, the cable retracts, lifting the cable anchor and causing both calipers to press rubber blocks against the wheel rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction. 2, record 30, English, - centerpull%20brakes

The impulse steam trap operates on the principle that hot water under pressure tends to flash into vapor when the pressure is reduced. When hot water is flowing to the trap the pressure in the control chamber is reduced, causing the valve to rise from its seal and discharge the water. As steam enters the trap, the pressure in the chamber increases, causing the valve to close, thus reducing the flow of steam to that which can pass through the small center orifice in the valve. 2, record 32, English, - impulse%20trap
