CEREAL DISEASE [8 records]

Record 1 2024-09-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cropping Systems
  • Plant and Crop Production
CONT

Break crops generally refer to a pulse or oilseed crop grown instead of cereals. The decision not to grow wheat but to grow and choose a break crop is based on many factors including the relative profitability of the crops – yield by price, the cereal disease pressure, herbicide resistance and personal preference.

CONT

DEF

A bacterial disease that attacks forage grasses and cereal grains.

CONT

Bacterial leaf streak (Xanthomonas campestris subsp holcicola) is widely distributed on sorghums - including sudangrass and Johnsongrass. Other plants that may become infected include corn, pearl millet, and foxtail millet. Narrow, water-soaked and translucent (1/8 by 1 to 6 inch long streaks), with red or brown borders and irregular blotches of color interrupting the streaks, form on the leaves. Irregular, oval blotches develop later as lesions enlarge and merge covering much of the leaf blade. The blotches have tan centers and red or brown margins. When infection is severe, leaves may wither and drop early.

DEF

CONT

Our team developed a Triticum durum-like tetraploid interspecific hybrid wheat which is very tolerant to the barley yellow dwarf virus.

OBS

No cereals are known anywhere to be immune to BYDV. Tolerant cultivars can live in a compromise with the virus in that they suffer much less or no yield loss, despite being infected, compared to susceptible cultivars. Cultivars can therefore be graded as tolerant, moderately tolerant, intermediate and susceptible according to their level of BYD tolerance as judged by their yield under BYDV infection. Cereal cultivars with at least moderate tolerance to the disease are now available or will be available in the near future.
