Two developments that had an especially important impact [on music in the 1960s] were quotation music and minimal music. The former, which involved the use of earlier music as material for new compositions, represented an idea with a long tradition in Western music. Quotation had been a standard procedure during the medieval and Renaissance eras and it persisted in occasional use throughout the common-practice period.... Quotation music of the 1960s was set apart, then, not so much by how pervasive it was(though it was certainly that) but by the fact that the borrowed material consumed such a large portion of the musical structure that its "foreign" nature was emphasized to such a marked degree.... Not uncommonly, entire compositions were made up of quotations. 2, record 1, English, - quotation%20music

The custom of secondary burial, or ossilegium, predominates throughout the Roman period. When the reinterred remains of individuals are buried in small containers known as ossuaries, most scholars are inclined to think of this phenomenon as being associated with Jerusalem.... The Torrens system consists essentially of affirmation by the state of the ownership of interests in land, and a search about a parcel is an examination of the affirmation and, usually, the documents referred to in the affirmation. This system has other names-for example, "Land titles" in Ontario and "Land Registration" in England. Differences exist among the forms of the system in the different jurisdictions, but probably none of the differences is substantial, and certainly none is substantial enough to justify making fundamental distinctions. The name Torrens system has been used simply because it is the most common and widely understood.("University of Toronto Law Journal", Vol. XXI, no. 4, p. 469). 1, record 40, English, - Torrens%20system

Confining Fires. The design of building features to contain fires effectively and their effects, is one of the most technically complex aspects of fire protection and is certainly the most difficult to evaluate statistically. In all the other phases-prevention, detection, suppression, evacuation-systems thinking also is essential, but it is at least possible to focus attention on one set of products or systems or occupants. But in fire confinement, systems thinking is both essential and unavoidable, because one must deal with every facet of building design and operation. One must consider not only the direct effects of wall assemblies, ceiling/floor assemblies, door assemblies, and the like of fire confinement but also their effectiveness in creating the design conditions assumed by every other part of the overall fire protection system. 1, record 45, English, - fire%20confinement

The second scourge of the weather is hail. This has, it is true, a more localised effect but the havoc that it brings is considerable in the small area that it sweeps. The grapes which have been split by hailstones lose their juice which in turn causes rot to set in, which lowers the quality of the already greatly reduced harvest. Certain vineyard areas have installed anti-hail guns but it must be admitted that their success is far from complete. 1, record 48, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun

Frost is a risk well known to local orchardists, but the sudden hail storms which occur regularly between September and January constitute a particularly selective threat to the young fruit crop.... alternative means were sought to combat hail. One such device was the ’hail gun’, originating in France and first introduced into an Ardmona orchard in time for the 1986-7 season. Certainly not a recent invention and lacking scientific support for its efficacy, the hail gun has gained a strong following among orchardists. Costing about $30, 000 each, hail guns are electronically operated and powered by exploding acetylene; the benefits were demonstrated, to the satisfaction of some, during a damaging storm in 1987. Their precise mode of action remains uncertain. 3, record 48, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun

Most beginners believe pond filters remove physical dirt and keep the water sparkling clear. This is not quite the case. Filters will certainly remove some physical dirt but only dirt that gets pumped into them. Most physical waste such as fish waste, excess food or decaying organic material will fall to the bottom of the pond where it will start breaking down into toxins. This is where filters start doing their work as a mini sewerage system for the pond. 2, record 59, English, - pond%20filter

"The Wall." It evades easy definition, but to borrow from Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s famous definition of obscenity, you know it when you see it - or rather, hit it. It usually happens around mile 20, give or take a couple of miles. Your pace slows, sometimes considerably. Some runners say that it feels as though their legs had been filled with lead quail shot ... Others can’t feel their feet at all. Thought processes become a little fuzzy ... Muscle coordination goes out the window, and self-doubt casts a deep shadow over the soul. ... Even if you’re racing at a reasonable pace and you’ve done a good job of carboloading in the days before the marathon, you still have only about 2,000 calories worth of glycogen stored in the muscles and liver; that’s about enough to get you to - surprise! - mile 20. If you manage to deplete your glycogen reserves, say hello to The Wall. 3, record 72, English, - wall
