What does benefit, harm and uncertainty mean? The regulation of consumer health products is based on the principle that the product's benefit must exceed any potential harm, with a reasonable degree of certainty. Benefit may be defined as any intended useful, positive effect obtained, whereas harm is any unintended effect that may cause injury or diminish human health in any way. Benefit and harm are not absolute, and Health Canada recognizes that uncertainties exist with respect to both the benefit and harm that may result from being exposed to a food or health product. 2, record 1, English, - benefit%2Dharm%2Duncertainty

Deductive logic deals with arguments where the truth of the conclusion is guaranteed by the truth of the premises. There are several advantages of a design-bid-build contract. The traditional structure is a familiar one and most owners, consultants, and contractors understand their roles and obligations. The completion of the design in advance of the bidding process allows for greater certainty for the contractor in fixing the price and for the owner in budgeting and financing the project. Since design and construction are completed sequentially, the owner maintains a detailed control of the design and the design team remains impartial and looks out for the interests of the owner. Design-bid-build also uses competition to improve the efficiency and quality for owners by providing a range of potential options and new contractors. 3, record 7, English, - design%2Dbid%2Dbuild%20contract

Extensive dialogue and debate has centered on when the vegetative state becomes permanent. Originally, and in common usage today, the term "persistent" was equated with "permanent. "But the two terms should be distinguished, because some persistent vegetative state patients, especially those with traumatic head injuries, may gradually improve to higher levels of cognitive and motor functions in the first few months.... So the term "persistent" should be restricted to patients in a vegetative state of at least 1-month duration, while "permanent" should be used when it can be determined with an extremely high degree of certainty that the condition is irreversible. 2, record 14, English, - permanent%20vegetative%20state

The point of beginning is not more controlling than other designated points of a grant and should be selected primarily because of its certainty of identity and facility of location.... Unfortunately, there is a decided tendency in the description of city lots to rely entirely upon the point of beginning for location, and the remaining calls merely give the length and possibly, but not always, the direction of the courses. This practice makes the point of beginning of particular importance, and it is not uncommon to find that a survey is impossible because of the uncertainty of the beginning point.(Skelton, p. 46) 1, record 40, English, - beginning%20point

2, record 50, French, - cr%C3%A9dit%20burnup

Somatic hallucinations are to be distinguished from unexplained physical sensations; a somatic hallucination can be identified with certainty only when a delusional interpretation of a physical illness is present. A somatic hallucination is to be distinguished also from hypochondriacal preoccupation with, or exaggeration of, normal physical sensations and from a tactile hallucination, in which the sensation is usually related to the skin. 1, record 52, English, - somatic%20hallucination

A condition caused by an action or inaction through intermediary causal agents. An effect for which the causal linkages to the action or inaction are not readily apparent. Contrasts with direct effect. This is not a measure of importance, but merely a classification by causal linkages. There must be certainty as to the objects of a trust--i. e. as to the persons whom the settlor intends to benefit and the extent of the benefit. The court cannot enforce a trust where it is not clear whom the settlor intends as the beneficiaries and accordingly such a trust will fail, although if that is the only defect the trustee will hold the trust property upon a resulting trust. 1, record 95, English, - object%20of%20a%20trust

It is not known with any degree of certainty, for example, what is the maximum safe level of lead or mercury intake by humans, or even whether DDT is dangerous to humans....
