The ATP molecule consists of a nitrogen-containing organic base (adenine), a sugar (ribose) and a string of three phosphate groups .... In most of the reactions where ATP serves as an energy currency only the terminal phosphate group is involved. ATP is formed by attaching a third phosphate to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) with the elimination of water. The reaction does not proceed spontaneously; on the contrary, a substantial quantity of energy must be supplied. Much of that energy can then be recovered in the reverse reaction, in which ATP is split into ADP and inorganic phosphate. 4, record 4, English, - inorganic%20phosphate

3, record 4, French, - phosphate%20inorganique

Polyethersulfone is a new high-temperature engineering thermoplastic with an outstanding long-term resistance to creep at temperatures up to 150°C. It is also capable of being used continuously under load at temperatures of up to about 180°C and, in some low-stress applications, up to 200°C.... While the sulfone group confers high-temperature performance, the ether linkage contributes toward practical processing by allowing mobility of the polymer chain when in the melt phase.... Polyethersulfone is especially resistant to acids, alkalies, oils, greases, and aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. It is attacked by ketones, esters, and some halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons. 3, record 7, English, - polyethersulfone

Cystine, the oxidized form of cysteine, plays a special role in protein structure since its disulfide group serves as a covalent cross-link between two polypeptide chains or between two points in a single chain. Disulfide cross-links can be cleaved by the action of reducing agents, e. g., mercaptoethanol, which yields two molecules of cysteine from cystine. Cystine can also be oxidized by such agents as performic acid, to yield two molecules of cysteic acid. 11, record 10, English, - cystine

6, record 10, French, - cystine

The decyl "chain" as shown in formulas 5 through 9 is termed a "straight chain", as one carbon follows another, like the links of a chain. Structures 15 or 16 are termed "branched chains". [An illustration of the formulas follows. ] The overall formula for 5-7, C10H21Cl, is the same. Formulas 5-7 each represents "decyl chloride. "However 15 and 16 differ in a crucial way. The difference is that formulas 15 and 16 have two "CH3" groups near the left end of the molecule. This is seen more easily in 17, a "condensed formula" that is equivalent to the "line formula" 15. Furthermore, 15 to 17 have a single "CH" group present, whereas 7 has no "CH" groups, only "CH3" and "CH2" groups. The new structure 15 or 17 carries a different name :"isodecyl chloride. Two amino acids may be joined by condensation between the carboxylic acid group of one molecule and the amino group of the other molecule, with the splitting out of a molecule of water.... The bond formed between the carbonyl group(-CO-) and the imino group(-NH-) is called a peptide bond. A dipeptide is a compound formed by the union of two amino acids through one peptide bond, such as alanyl-serine shown above. A tripeptide is formed from three amino acids joined by two peptide bonds, while a tetrapeptide is formed from four amino acids, etc. When many amino acids are linked into a chain by peptide bonds, the structure is called a polypeptide. Thus proteins may be described as molecules that are composed of polypeptide chains. 3, record 20, English, - carbonyl

Folding a polypeptide chain to a compact globular form will necessitate some way to change the direction of the polypeptide chain, as might, for example, be required to connect adjacent ends of the polypeptide chains in an antiparallel [beta]-sheet. A commonly observed and particularly efficient way to do this is by formation of a tight loop in which a residue's carbonyl group forms a hydrogen bond with the amide NH group of the residue three positions further along the polypeptide chain. The resulting so-called [beta]-bend reverses the direction of the polypeptide chain. 1, record 24, English, - beta%2Dbend

2, record 25, French, - catalyse%20covalente

Perfluorooctane sulphonate(PFOS)... belongs to a group of organic compounds, perfluorinated organic substances, which have the shared feature that all the hydrogen atoms, bound to the carbon chain, are exchanged for fluorine atoms. A reactive sulphonate group has been bound to one end of the carbon chain. Further chemical groups are bound to the sulphonate group so that various types of surface-active substances are formed. These substances may then in some cases be broken down to PFOS in nature. Altogether there are several hundred different compounds where PFOS forms part of the structure. 5, record 29, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate
Record number: 29, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A large proportion of the PFOS produced forms part of polymers, where the final product may contain residues of fluorinated starting substances that have not or have only partially reacted. PFOS is used for surface treatment and as an impregnating agent in a number of products such as carpets, furniture, paper, textiles and leather. Other PFOS-like substances are used as surface-active substances e.g. in cleaning products. 5, record 29, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate

EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] is proposing a supplemental significant new use rule (SNUR) under section 5(a)(2) of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for the following 75 substances: Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOSH) and certain of its salts (PFOSS), perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (POSF), certain higher and lower homologues of PFOSH and POSF, and certain other chemical substances, including polymers, that are derived from PFOSH and its homologues. These chemicals are collectively referred to as perfluoroalkyl sulfonates, or PFAS. ... In the original proposed SNUR, these chemicals were referred to collectively as perfluorooctylsulfonates, or PFOS, but commenters noted that this generic usage of the term PFOS was inconsistent with the use by the manufacturer, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M), of PFOS to refer only to chemicals with an eight-carbon, or C8, chain length. 6, record 29, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate

High molecular weight alcohols are produced synthetically by the Oxo and Ziegler processes. Those from C8 to C11 are oily liquids; those greater than C11 are solids. Other methods of production are(1) reduction of vegetable seed oils and their fatty acids with sodium,(2) catalytic hydrogenation at elevated temperatures and pressures, and(3) hydrolysis of spermaceti and sperm oil by saponification and vacuum fractional distillation. The more important commercial saturated alcohols are octyl, decyl, laluryl, myristyl, cetyl, and stearyl. The commercially important unsaturated alcohols, such as oleyl, linoleyl, and linolenyl, are also normally included in this group. The odor tends to disappear as the chain length increases. Enzymes sometimes form transient covalent bonds with their substrates. In one example, a carboxyl group in a polypeptide chain forms a covalent bond at an activated serine residue of a protease as the backbone chain is broken. When the unbound portion of the polypeptide chain has diffused away, a second step occurs in which a water molecule hydrolyzes the newly formed covalent bond, thereby releasing the portion of the polypeptide bound to the enzyme surface and restoring a hydrogen atom to the serine. 4, record 40, English, - hydrolyze

Bile acids are steroids, having a hydroxyl group, and a five-carbon-atom side chain terminating in a carboxyl group. Cholic acid is the most abundant bile acid in human bile. Others are deoxycholic and lithocholic acids. The bile acids do not occur free in bile but are linked to the amino acids, glycine and taurine. These conjugated acids are water-soluble; their salts are powerful detergents and as such, aid in the absorption of fats from the intestine. 4, record 45, English, - bile%20acid
