Irreversible alteration, generally deterioration, of the characteristics of paper or board in the course of time. 2, record 1, English, - aging
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The greatest determinant of the condition of paper remains the integrity of the cellulose fibres. The cellulose polymer is prone to chemical and physical damage that weakens the fibre network on a submicroscopic level, eventually manifesting in visible degradation. The principle mechanism of deterioration is chain scission(the long polymer is reduced to shorter and shorter segments) ;as this happens, the paper begins to lose its physical strength and may become discoloured. As the aging of paper decreases the length of the underlying cellulose chains and therefore the paper fibres, papers that started with longer fibres can undergo further aging before losing mechanical strength. 3, record 1, English, - aging

Altération irréversible, qui est généralement une détérioration, des caractéristiques du papier ou du carton, au cours du temps. 2, record 1, French, - vieillissement
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 1, French, - vieillissement

The rod or perch or pole is a surveyors tool and unit of length equal to 5 1⁄2 yards, 161⁄2 feet, 1⁄320 of a statute mile or one-fourth of a surveyor's chain and 5. 0292 meters. The rod is useful as a unit of length because whole number multiples of it can form one acre of square measure. The perfect acre is a rectangular area of 43, 560 square feet, bounded by sides of length 660 feet and 66 feet(220 yards and 22 yards) or, equivalently, 40 rods and 4 rods. An acre is therefore 160 square rods. Since the adoption of the international yard on 1 July 1959, the rod has been equal to exactly 5. 0292 meters. 1, record 6, English, - rod

The bucket pump is similar to the rag pump and lift disk pump but does not require a tube to draw the water up. It is not very common anymore, but can still be found occasionally. One advantage of this pump is that the buckets don’t turn upright until they are well below the surface of the water. They fill with clean water, and bring up less of the scum that often floats on the surface of a well. Large old sailing ships sometimes used bucket pumps. They were also used on farms and many other places. Of course, the length of the chain and the number of buckets can vary greatly. 3, record 16, English, - bucket%20pump

Perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) ... belongs to a group of organic compounds, perfluorinated organic substances, which have the shared feature that all the hydrogen atoms, bound to the carbon chain, are exchanged for fluorine atoms. A reactive sulphonate group has been bound to one end of the carbon chain. Further chemical groups are bound to the sulphonate group so that various types of surface-active substances are formed. These substances may then in some cases be broken down to PFOS in nature. Altogether there are several hundred different compounds where PFOS forms part of the structure. 5, record 20, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate
Record number: 20, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A large proportion of the PFOS produced forms part of polymers, where the final product may contain residues of fluorinated starting substances that have not or have only partially reacted. PFOS is used for surface treatment and as an impregnating agent in a number of products such as carpets, furniture, paper, textiles and leather. Other PFOS-like substances are used as surface-active substances e.g. in cleaning products. 5, record 20, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate

EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] is proposing a supplemental significant new use rule(SNUR) under section 5(a)(2) of the Toxic Substances Control Act(TSCA) for the following 75 substances : Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid(PFOSH) and certain of its salts(PFOSS), perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride(POSF), certain higher and lower homologues of PFOSH and POSF, and certain other chemical substances, including polymers, that are derived from PFOSH and its homologues. These chemicals are collectively referred to as perfluoroalkyl sulfonates, or PFAS.... In the original proposed SNUR, these chemicals were referred to collectively as perfluorooctylsulfonates, or PFOS, but commenters noted that this generic usage of the term PFOS was inconsistent with the use by the manufacturer, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company(3M), of PFOS to refer only to chemicals with an eight-carbon, or C8, chain length. 6, record 20, English, - perfluorooctanesulfonate

Fluorescence-based amplified fragment length polymorphism(fbAFLP) is a novel assay based on the fluorescent analysis of an amplified subset of restriction fragments. The fbAFLP assay involves the selective PCR [polymerase chain reaction] amplification of restriction fragments from a total digest of genomic DNA. The ligation of adapters with primer-specific sites coupled with primers containing selective nucleotides allowed the full potential of PCR to be realized while maintaining the advantages of restriction endonuclease analysis. Fluorescence-based fragment analysis with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis provides the accurate band sizing required for homology assessment. 5, record 22, English, - fluorescent%20amplified%20fragment%20length%20polymorphism

High molecular weight alcohols are produced synthetically by the Oxo and Ziegler processes. Those from C8 to C11 are oily liquids; those greater than C11 are solids. Other methods of production are(1) reduction of vegetable seed oils and their fatty acids with sodium,(2) catalytic hydrogenation at elevated temperatures and pressures, and(3) hydrolysis of spermaceti and sperm oil by saponification and vacuum fractional distillation. The more important commercial saturated alcohols are octyl, decyl, laluryl, myristyl, cetyl, and stearyl. The commercially important unsaturated alcohols, such as oleyl, linoleyl, and linolenyl, are also normally included in this group. The odor tends to disappear as the chain length increases.

Chain dimensioning also known as point-to-point dimensioning, is a method of dimensioning from one feature to the next. Each dimension is dependent upon the previous dimension or dimensions. This is a common practice, although caution should be used as the tolerance of each dimension builds on the next, which is known as tolerance buildup, or stacking. 3, record 42, English, - chain%20dimensioning
Record number: 42, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Two plans of dimensioning are used on mechanical drawings.... One is called point-to-point or chain dimensioning; each length is dimensioned from the end of the preceding one. These dimensions are usually taken directly from the designer's sketch; however tolerances are cumulative and, rather than averaging out, usually add or subtract so that intermediate clearances may be disturbed. In the other plan, called datum dimensioning..., all dimension lines in each direction extend from a datum or reference line or plane which is usually the first machined surface. 4, record 42, English, - chain%20dimensioning
