Originally called "house clocks" or "great chamber clocks, "lantern clocks were renamed as such during the mid-nineteenth century. As their original name suggests, they were designed as simple, functional timepieces, used to regulate the daily routine and activities of the household in which they hung. Their weight-driven movements were stout, reliable, comparatively cheap and were more accurate than contemporary spring clocks... Domestic inventories of the period show that lantern clocks were usually hung in a hall or on a staircase, where sufficient space existed beneath for the drop of their weights and where the sound of their bell or alarm could reverberate through the house. 4, record 4, English, - lantern%20clock

Mége-Mouriés began to experiment... and in 1869 he commenced making his new product in a small factory near Paris. Microbial enzymes are more useful than enzymes derived from plants or animals because of the great variety of catalytic activities available, because cheap, regular, abundant supplies of even quality can usually be developed, occasionally by surface culture but usually by the deep culture aerobic fermentation techniques widely used in the production of antibiotics; also because microbial enzymes are usually more stable than the corresponding plant and animal enzymes, and because microbial enzyme production is usually a more convenient and safer procedure than production from plant and animal sources. 3, record 41, English, - microbial%20enzyme

2, record 52, Spanish, - Ley%20de%20Gresham

The American term "skid row" is used to refer to the rundown area of a city where alcoholics and vagrants congregate. The first skid row was Skid Road (Yesler Way) in Seattle, where logs were skidded into the water for delivery to Henry Yesler’s lumber mills. After the onset of the Great Depression, the area went into decline, and skid row became synonymous with being a bad neighborhood. 1, record 53, English, - skid%20row

As the richer ores of gold (and other metals) are depleted, it is necessary for mining companies to focus on low-grade refractory gold-bearing ores in which the gold is encapsulated in the crystal structure of a sulphide matrix (typically pyrite). These ores cannot be broken down by cyanidation without an oxidative pre-treatment such as nitric acid oxidation, roasting, pressure oxidation or biological oxidation using microorganisms. Originally conceived for the purpose of separating aluminum from iron, particularly in composite parts and assemblies (eg. an automotive piston), the sweat furnace also separates aluminum from mixed waste, including, dirt, rock, glass, rubber, plastics and other organics. Polystyrene foam comes in two major categories, expanded bead, and extruded. Expanded bead foam is made by superheating small pellets of styrene so that they rapidly expand(sort of like popcorn) to form a low density foam. Expanded bead foam is light(about 1. 5 pounds per cubic foot typically) and inexpensive, and because of the way it is made, lends itself to all types of molded products. It is the type of foam found in beer coolers and most contour packaging. It is also used as a cheap insulator. Because expanded bead foam has air pockets between the beads, it is less suitable for exterior use, for flotation, or for any application where water or water vapor can invade the air pockets between beads. 1, record 74, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam
Record number: 74, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Bead Foam. This material is produced from expandable polystyrene beads (granules) ... There are two methods used in the preparation of the beads. In one, polymer granules are heated with a blowing agent (usually a hydrocarbon) that penetrates them. In the second method styrene monomer is polymerized in the presence of a blowing agent so that the blowing agent becomes entrapped in the plastic beads.... The expandable beads are converted to foam as follows. They are subjected to heating by steam, hot water or hot air to give pre-expanded beads; aged (or conditioned) for a period of time; the pre-expanded beads again heated (in a mould) so that they undergo additional expansion, flow to fill the interstices (spaces between particles) and fuse. This results in an integral moulded piece. 2, record 74, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam

1, record 78, French, - analyse%20des%20AA

Then he proceeds to "the downtown frame, "that gray area of cheap hotels, parking lots, pawnshops, and abandoned warehouses surrounding the central business district. He identifies two different types of downtown frame, the zone of discard and the zone of assimilation. Tutorial expertise must include information about specific misconceptions people often develop in a particular domain, as well as processes and strategies to handle them. Indeed, many misconceptions are domain-specific and shared by many individuals, and this speaks in favor of a model-driven approach to diagnosis. But misconceptions present common patterns and thus can often be traced to deeper misconceptions, like overgeneralizations or cheap metaphors. This could warrant a more data-driven approach. At any rate, each type of conceptual error must be approached with a specific strategy, and this knowledge must be part of the tutor. Knowledge about misconceptions must be coupled with a powerful diagnostic process, since there is no simple mapping between misconceptions and surface manifestations. 5, record 91, English, - tutorial%20expertise

personal phone number service : Needless to say, the service is not exactly cheap. All unplanned long-distance costs are borne by the subscriber, and the basic fixed charge is the equivalent of around FF70 per month. However, in addition to the automatic "scheduling agent, "the user can make use of services which filter calls in various ways. For example, one can decide to only let through calls from people who have a predetermined code, or find out who the caller is before answering. Bell is reluctant to portray the new service as heralding the lifetime individual phone number. "People already have enough numbers to deal with, ": says Jacques Houpert. "Surveys have shown that in most user's eyes, the idea of a lifetime number smacks too much of regimentation and compulsory ID cards. It's seen as like being tattooed.

We are entering a world that will be dominated by engineering,... when the driving force of the global economy will no longer be inexpensive microchips in plentiful supply but cheap genes by the bushelful.... Preparation of bleach chemicals. All conventional bleaching chemicals can be produced from air, water and brine(NaCl solution) utilizing varying amounts of energy. Since the raw materials are cheap, it follows that manufacturing costs are mainly a function of how much energy is expended. Oxygen. Two systems are utilized for oxygen generation : cryogenic air separation and absorption-based separation.... The adsorption-based oxygen plant yields a gas product and is suitable only for onsite generation.... adsorption systems separate air at ambient temperatures using molecular sieve adsorbents. The adsorbent picks up nitrogen and other impurities at the system feed pressure, while the product oxygen passes straight through the bed. After the bed is saturated with nitrogen, it is regenerated by lowering the pressure to release the adsorbed components. Adsorption processes are cyclical, and multiple beds are used to maintain continuous oxygen production. 1, record 99, English, - adsorption%2Dbased%20separation

Two systems are utilized for oxygen generation : cryogenic air separation and adsorption-based separation.... Cryogenic plants compress air and remove water, CO2 and other impurities in a pretreatment system. The dry air is then cooled and liquified at cryogenic temperatures using turbo expanders and/or refrigeration systems. Finally, the liquified air is distilled to separate it into oxygen, nitrogen and other coproducts. 1, record 100, English, - cryogenic%20air%20separation
