ditch check : A small dam positioned at intervals in a road ditch to prevent erosion.

OBS

Ditches are drainage channels that have a greater depth than width, and are capable of carrying a greater volume and velocity of water than swales... Ditches usually require periodic dredging and regrading to free the channel of silt.

Fossés. Ils sont destinés à recevoir les eaux de ruissellement ou d'infiltration venant du terrain supérieur. L'eau recueillie par les fossés s'évacue soit par infiltration dans le fond du fossé, soit, si le terrain est imperméable, par écoulement et dans ce cas on doit donner une pente longitudinale au fossé pour diriger les eaux vers un point susceptible de les absorber : ruisseau, lac, ou bassin de retenue, d'infiltration ou d'évaporation.

Les fossés ne sont pas revêtus et sont taillés directement dans le terrain. [...] Les fossés doivent être curés périodiquement pour éviter que les détritus et la végétation ne les comblent et gênent l'infiltration des eaux.
