Many of the terms listed above may be used interchangeably depending on the jurisdiction. The following trends may be noted. "Lawyer" is a generic term. "Counsel", frequently used in Canada, may be a general term, or may refer more specifically to a lawyer who can plead in court. A "barrister" is a courtroom lawyer as opposed to a "solicitor" who is basically an office lawyer.(In Canada, both of these functions may be carried out by the same person). In some jurisdictions, "attorney" is used as a synonym of "lawyer", but in others, "attorney" becomes synonymous with "solicitor". Moreover, an "attorney-at-law" may sometimes plead in court.
