A newcomer to Alaska or northwestern Canada, especially the Yukon [who has yet to overcome the severeness of a first winter]. 2, record 1, English, - Cheechako
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Cheechako was used for those inexperienced woud-be miners who rushed into the Yukon Territory during the Klondike gold rush of 1897-1899, and so can be found, along with its antithesis "Sourdough," in the writings of Jack London and Robert Service ... In Alaska and Canada there are apparently many criteria that can be used to establish when a newcomer has surpassed the status of Cheechako, and the most popular one seems to be the Cheechako’s witnessing both the freezing of the rivers in the fall and, after the long winter, their break-up in the spring. 2, record 1, English, - Cheechako
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Cheechako was originally a Chinook Jargon word for "newcomer, "from "chee"(new) and "chako"(come).
