CHROMOSOME PAIRING [6 records]

Record 1 2014-12-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
DEF

A hypothesis for the interpretation of intrachromosomal genetic recombination which is not regarded as a physical exchange of preformed genetic strands (chromosomes, chromatids).

OBS

It implies the pairing of two parental genomes or their subunits(if more than one linkage group is present at the time of their replication). After a part of the genetic information of one strand has been copied, the copy process switches to the other of the paired strands and begins to incorporate the existing genetic information in the growing copy. If the parental strands contained different alleles, a recombinant chromosome is produced possessing some alleles of the one, some of the other. In this way the process leads to a nonreciprocal recombinant.

DEF

DEF

In meiotic cells, a protein with broad phyletic distribution and unique cellular localization which shows a high binding efficiency for single-stranded DNA and the property of catalyzing the renaturation of thermally denatured DNA. The protein is assumed to play a role in meiotic recombination and to promote chromosome pairing and crossing over between homologous chromosomes. It is absent from somatic tissues.

CONT

CONT

Root tip cells of Vicia faba were treated by caffeine and uracil to induce high frequency of somatic meiosis-like reduction... The process of somatic meiosis-like reduction was observed, which existed in two types. One was chromosome reductional grouping, in which chromosomes in a cell usually separated into two groups without the role of spindle fibers. The other type was somatic meiosis, which was analogous to meiosis in gamatogenesis and characterized by pairing and chiasmata of chromosomes.

CONT

In a polyploid derivative of an interspecific hybrid each parental chromosome is represented twice(amphidiploid) or one genome occurs twice and the other only once(sesquidiploid). So there is a choice of pairing between homologous chromosomes(autosyndesis) or homologous chromosomes(allosyndesis). For estimating the amount of allosyndesis in a polyploid derivative of an interspecific hybrid, allosyndetic bivalents should also be taken into consideration in addition to multivalents.

CONT

The pairing of the homologous chromosomes in the preliminary prophase of meiosis divides the number of chromosomes in half; a pair of homologues behaves as one chromosome. Each homologue has replicated before the pairing; after pairing, the chromosomes are bivalents, structures consisting of two parts(homologues), each of which is a pair of sister chromosome strands.

DEF
