Subject field(s)
  • Hygiene and Health
CONT

The first strategy [that is suggested to patients with obesity] for developing an active lifestyle is reducing sedentary activities. There are many ways in which this can be achieved..., and the strategy should be personalised on the basis of a patient's lifestyle and habits. For example, a housewife with obesity could be encouraged to reduce the time she spends watching TV [television], to take the stairs instead of the elevator and to clean the house alone, without resorting to a housekeeper. Similarly, a person who always uses a car to get around should be encouraged to use the car as little as possible and begin to get around by bike.

CONT

Zones of Water Pollution. Discharge or mixing zone is where pollutants enter the stream or the river. If the waste is dark, it will make the water dark, increase its temperature and subsequently oxygen levels will drop. The rate of discharge should not be stronger than flow of the stream. In zone of degradation oxygen levels drop from BOD(biological/biochemical oxygen demand). Zone of active decomposition is characterized by the following changes : 1) dissolved oxygen(DO) will be at its absolute minimum; 2) odors and gases bubbling up. In the zone of recovery the river will slowly restore its oxygen through aeration process. The anaerobic conditions will disappear. Nitrites will be converted into nitrates and stimulate growth of algae, which will produce oxygen through process of photosynthesis. In zone of clean water oxygen levels are really elevated. And BOD is almost satisfied.

"Heat of respiration". Process by which oxygen and carbohydrates are assimilated by a substance; also when carbon dioxide and water are given off by a substance.

CONT

Peat moss, sphagnum etc. used for packing roots should be new and clean. Seedlings at the stage of active growth may rot by respiratory heat or overmoisture from transpiration. Adequate use of packing material is important for these kinds of plants.

CONT

Tomatoes destined for distant markets or tomatoes in the pink or light red stage should be cooled immediately after harvest to avoid becoming overripe before reaching the consumer. Placing containers of warm tomatoes in a refrigerated space, known as room cooling, is recommended. To aid room cooling and prevent the buildup of heat of respiration, containers of tomatoes should be loosely stacked with space between the containers to allow for sufficient air circulation.
