CONT

Danish [and] Scottish seining methods are used to catch species of groundfish such as flounder and cod. Both methods use similar nets and series of ropes spread out in a pear-shaped form along the ocean floor. The action of the ropes stirs up a mud cloud and herds the fish into the path of the net. In Danish seining, the vessel remains in a fixed position while the gear is hauled along the bottom. In Scottish seining, the net and ropes are towed along the ocean floor while they are closing. [This] is sometimes referred to as "fly-dragging[. "]

CONT

The seine can be operated by... two boats(pair seining). During the fishing operation, the seine ropes herd the fish into the path of the net. The length of seine rope to a large extent determines the shape and size of the fished area. The boat seine is commonly used to catch benthic species such as flounders and soles, but also other demersal species such as cod.

DEF

[A] numerical value used to demonstrate the trend in relative abundance over time.

CONT

Estimates of catch typically make up the bulk of the data that is applied to a stock assessment model. But most stock assessment models also require some kind of index of abundance. The index of abundance is a value that indicates the trend in relative abundance over time. Often[, ] an index of abundance is simply the number of fish caught during a survey. The index of abundance for a cod stock, for example, may be the average number of cod caught per tow from a research vessel. Each tow would be of a specified length, depth and speed using a standardized net, so that the index of abundance values could be compared over time.

DEF

A long box-shaped net that extends to the shoreline and is used to catch cod.

CONT

The cod trap is basically a room, with four walls and a floor, constructed of netting. Fish enter the trap through a doorway in the front wall. Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. It is held on location by a system of corner ropes anchored to the sea bottom.

Stern trawling is a more recent development that is superseding side trawling. Built over the stern[, ] there is usually a gantry for operating the net and warps, and many stern trawlers have a slipway in the stern up which the net is hauled. This means the cod end does not have to be lifted over the stern or side. This technique allows greater mechanization, speeding up the hauling of the net and making the trawlerman's life a little less arduous.

DEF
