Record 1 2022-10-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
DEF

A long box-shaped net that extends to the shoreline and is used to catch cod.

CONT

The cod trap is basically a room, with four walls and a floor, constructed of netting. Fish enter the trap through a doorway in the front wall. Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. It is held on location by a system of corner ropes anchored to the sea bottom.

CONT

... two doorways are used. The first doorway extends 43 fathoms into the [cod] trap and is guarded by two "winker" nets.... The entrance of the first doorway is 6 fathoms wide by 8 fathoms high while the exit is narrowed to 8 fathoms high by 8 feet wide. The "winker" nets on this doorway serve to turn the fish away from it and aid in preventing the escape of the fish.

The results suggest that, for the same amount of fish taken, a quota-based trawl fishery presents a much greater risk of collapse to the cod stock than does an inshore trap fishery.
