Already at about 600, 000 km from the nucleus, i. e. 12 hours before the closest approach, the Johnstone Plasma Analyser(JPA) detected the first presence of cometary ions. At a distance of 18-15, 000 km, both the JPA and the Reme Plasma Analyser(RPA) reported what looked like a bow shock or a bow wave, much more distinct than had been predicted for such a weak comet. The magnetometer measurements carried out during the inbound trajectory could not confirm this finding, but reported exciting wave phenomena not seen in a natural plasma before. However, on the outbound trajectory the magnetometer saw clear indications of a shock.

The crater represents the only crater exposed at the surface in Alberta, the 30th crater recognized in Canada and the youngest. It was then known as the Comet Nucleus Sample Return mission(CNSR) and was envisaged as a collaboration with NASA. The Boeing 707 KC-135 that flies parabolic arcs to create short periods of weightlessness, used by the NASA to train pilots and astronauts and so named for the effect its near-zero gravity environment has on its crew.

NASA normally uses the Vomit Comet to train astronauts, test equipment and carry out experiments. The fun starts when the plane noses over into a steep dive, creating a free fall that simulates the weightlessness of outer space. But the price for 30 seconds of floating fun is sudden, equal doses of two Gs, or a doubling of Earth's gravity. It's the sudden reversal that causes many passengers to lose their lunch.

From its close orbit above the tiny nucleus, Rosetta will be able to send back the most detailed images and information ever obtained of a comet. When a suitable landing site has been chosen, about a month after global mapping starts, the orbiter will release a 100 kg lander onto the comet's solid surface. Touchdown must be quite slow-less than one metre per second-to allow for the almost negligible gravitational pull of the tiny nucleus. In order to ensure that the lander does not bounce and disappear into space, an anchoring harpoon will be fired into the surface immediately on impact.

Penetrators as tools for exploring extraterrestrial solid surfaces have been developed for a couple of space missions to Mars, the Moon, comets, and the icy satellites of the giant planets. They are particularly useful to characterize the strength properties and the layering of planetary nearsurface layers. Being currently engaged with the development of an instrumented "anchoring harpoon" for the lander of ESA's comet mission Rosetta, we propose similar devices for application aboard future Mars lander missions.

JPA also studied this interaction by recording fluxes and velocity distributions for low to medium energy ions. High energy ions were detected by the energetic particle experiment, EPA.

... Halley's method is in a class of algorithms that begins with a guess. The iteration is supposed to lead to a better guess, and the process is repeated. Halley's method behaves like a comet torn between conflicting tugs of two nearby planets. In some cases it might be difficult to determine which of the two nearby planets a comet will collide with even though we know the gravity equations.
