Subject field(s)
  • Ship's Organization (Military)

CONT

NCHBs [Navy Cargo Handling Battalions] operate most effectively when employed solely on ship loading and discharge operations and when each of its 16 seven-man hatch teams is augmented by 7 unskilled or stevedore personnel provided by the supported unit or activity. When augmented with 112 personnel (7 per hatch team), a NCHB can achieve a ship discharge rate of approximately 2880 MTONs per day pier-side, and approximately 1920 MTONs per day discharge rate in-stream.

CONT

Within their hatch teams, battalion personnel in all of the team positions : hatch captain, hold boss, crane operator, signalman and stevedore, practiced the skills necessary to demonstrate their competence during next year's assessment. Hatch team coordination, safety, crane operation, signaling, tag line handling, hatch cover heavy-lifts, and container lifts were just a few of the skills practiced.

DEF

Large cantilever cranes designed to lift and move containers to and from a pier and a ship alongside. Attaches to a spreader by cables driven by large crane motors. Some cranes can be as high as 100 feet off the pier.

DEF

Transporter crane. Type of crane used for handling shipping containers. Typically, it is a rope-hoisting, rope-traversing crane which operates by lifting the container(hoisting) and moving it along a trolley(traversing) before lowering it into position. The crane moves along the length of the quay on rails. It is equipped with a spreader beam which attaches to the corner castings of the container to enable it to be lifted.

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Underground Mining
CONT

For both caverns and tunnels, excavation is from the central tunnel ways using conventional mining techniques. In the tunnel concept..., the prepackaged wastes are lowered down the shaft and brought to the emplacement vaults by rail. The packages are then unloaded by forklifts or other conventional container handling equipment and emplaced for permanent disposal. The cavern concept implements a secondary haulage system where packaged wastes are transferred from rail to the emplacement vaults by overhead crane.

CONT

The Konrad mine has some geological features which make it very suitable for disposal of certain types of radioactive waste. ... Geotechnical properties of the rock allow construction of disposal caverns of adequate volume. Galleries containing wastes in drums or contaminated components can be backfilled and sealed, as well as the rest of the mine, including the two shafts.

CONT

The concept [burying the waste deep underground in the Canadian Shield] isolates used fuel from the environment using a series of natural as well as manmade barriers. Used nuclear fuel bundles would be contained in vaults 500 to 1,000 metres below ground. These vaults would consist of a network of tunnels and disposal rooms about 2 kilometres by 2 kilometres that could hold 191,000 tonnes of used fuel.

PHR

To backfill, to seal galleries.

CONT

PHR

Remblayer, sceller une galerie.
