"Growing medium" is by no means as standard a term as "container". Other terms used synonymously are "rooting mix", "pot mix", "growth medium", "soil mix", and "potting mix". It is the material that fills the containers and performs the same function for the seedling as soil does in the field.

OBS

The term "mix" is used in a number of the terms synonymously with medium, because it describes the medium to be a mixture of substances. This is usually, but not always, the case.

Ainsi, il y a les contenants non dégradables, conçus de façon à permettre une expansion des racines en se divisant en morceaux, tels que la cartouche carrée de [Walters] ou ayant une partie qui s'enlève lors de la plantation comme le contenant ITW-one-way.

Une étude de D. Nolet (section Montréal-Québec) portant sur le terme "conteneur" (janvier 1984) établit la pertinence des termes "contenant" et "récipient" et signale que l'utilisation de "conteneur" ne semble pas justifiée. Quant à "container", qui se retrouve dans quelques ouvrages français, il demeure un anglicisme.
