Most petroleum contamination in Alaska comes from leaking storage tanks, containers, pipes, and equipment; transportation accidents; and improper handling and disposal practices that lead to spills... The primary concern with petroleum contamination is its chronic toxicity when ingested through contaminated soil, water, or foods over long periods of time. Different types of petroleum cause different kinds of health effects, including headaches, nausea, skin irritation, and cancer. For instance, gasoline contains benzene, a known carcinogen to people and animals. 2, record 4, English, - petroleum%20contamination

Bronze disease is the irreversible and nearly inexorable corrosion process occurring when chlorides come into contact with bronze or other copper-bearing alloys. It occurs as a dark green or a lighter fuzzy green coating on copper, bronze, and other copper-bearing alloys generally due either to contamination by salt water or after burial in dirt(as chloride salts are generally present in soil to some degree). If not treated, complete destruction of the affected artefact is possible. Transfer of chlorides from the contaminated artefact to other artefacts can spread the condition. 2, record 5, English, - bronze%20disease

The variability of the natural pedo-geochemical content and of the usual content often increases with the size of the portion of the soil mantle investigated. So it is recommended to assess the natural pedo-geochemical value and the usual value at a spatial scale similar to those that it will be used for. For instance, if the natural pedo-geochemical value or the usual value is used to evaluate soil contamination at a local scale, i. e. agricultural plot, contaminated site, watershed, it is necessary to refer to the natural pedo-geochemical value or the usual value that has been determined at the same scale. 1, record 18, English, - usual%20background%20value

As presented here, the background contents are concentrations, e.g. mass of substance for a mass unit of soil. It can be useful to determine the stocks of substances in soil, as a mass of substance for a definite volume or area of soil. To this end, the bulk density of each soil horizon (or layer) and its thickness have to be taken into account. 1, record 18, English, - usual%20background%20value

1, record 18, French, - valeur%20de%20fond%20habituelle

SCG specializes in environmental remediation and has focused on groundwater treatment and soil remediation through the development, manufacture, sale and distribution of environmental remediation equipment. For sites where free hydrocarbon product is present in the subsurface, the relatively new bioslurping technology may provide a timely and cost effective remedial solution. SCG has developed an advanced innovative remedial option in which light non-aqueous phase liquids(LNAPLs), hydrocarbon contaminated groundwater and volatile constituents in soil vapours are aggressively captured and subsequently treated in-situ via Multi Phase Vacuum Extraction and Treatment(MPVET). This system is suited for the capture of a full range of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants(gasoline to heavy oils) and a variety of subsurface conditions(low permeability coupled with low hydraulic yield to moderate permeability coupled with high hydraulic yield). 1, record 22, English, - multi%2Dphase%20vacuum%20extraction%20and%20treatment

If a germicide is applied into soil, the germicide will be contaminated and rendered ineffective. Once a surface that has been properly treated with a germicide is touched by a human, animal, plant, or something "dirty", washing, rinsing, and treating must be performed again in order to reinstate the protection. Low Temperature Thermal Desorption(LTTD) is an Ex-Situ means of physically separating volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants from soils. Contaminated soil is placed in a chamber, and heated to volatilize the associated hydrocarbons. BCDP can be used to treat the same type of material which can be treated by a thermal desorber :contaminated soils, sludges and filter cakes. If PCBs(and possibly other chlorinated compounds) are treated, the bicarbonate catalyst will increase plant efficiency by allowing the soil to be cleaned at a lower temperature and chemically destroying some of the PCBs. Although the BCDP was initially designed to treat PCB contaminated soil, its performance on other types of contaminants can be predicted. The BCDP will remove both volatile and semivolatile compounds from soil, including very low volatility chlorinated organics. 3, record 32, English, - base%20catalyzed%20decomposition%20process

In the NRC [National Research Council of Canada] Solvent Extraction Soil Remediation(SESR) Process, solvent extraction of the soil contaminant(s) occurs concurrently with agglomeration of the dispersed soil particles. Soil is initially mixed with a bulk liquid phase which must be a good solvent for the contaminant but be non-wetting with respect to the particulate surfaces. A minor amount of a second liquid is added which must be immiscible with the suspending phase but preferentially wet the soil particles. For the remediation of contaminated soils the two liquids of choice are a hydrocarbon solvent and water, respectively. 1, record 58, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

Solvent extraction soil remediation(SESR) is an ex situ process which uses an innovative liquid phase agglomeration(LPA) step to separate fine, dispersed particles from the extracting solvent.... Solvent extraction soil remediation(SESR) is ideally suited to treat soils, sediments and sludges contaminated with a wide variety of organic materials such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, PAHs, coal tar wastes, drilling muds, crude oils, and so forth. More importantly it can treat these materials when the solid matrix contains significant amounts of fine particles, including clay and clay-like materials. 3, record 58, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

1, record 58, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20de%20restauration%20des%20sols%20par%20extraction%20au%20solvant

According to Mr. Gervais Leclerc, contaminated soils specialist at Environment Canada, CANTOX refers to a computer modelling technique that is used in epidemiological studies to quantitatively assess risk resulting from exposure to a contaminant. In this particular instance, soil samples are being analyzed following the closure of gasoline stations. Other models that are sometimes used in include the stochastic Monte Carlo simulation technique(where the exposure factor is not considered) and Environment Canada's AERIS method. 2, record 63, English, - CANTOX%20method

The ongoing modernization of the industrial structure in Quebec results in the decommissioning of many old industrial sites. Some of these sites, formerly located on the outskirts of cities, are now prime residential, commercial of light industry lots as cities have grown around them. Aware that some industries may have contaminated soil and groundwater while producing or utilizing hazardous substances, the Ministry has established the Contaminated Sites Rehabilitation Policy. This Policy favors the redevelopment of such land while avoiding contamination-related hazards by providing guidelines for the necessary assessment and rehabilitation. 1, record 65, English, - Contaminated%20Sites%20Rehabilitation%20Policy
