The Solicitor General was the Cabinet minister with primary responsibility in the fields of corrections and law enforcement. He/she was also responsible for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Correctional Service of Canada, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, and the National Parole Board.

The office of Solicitor General of Canada was created in 1892. The incumbent was then designated an officer to assist the Minister of Justice. When the office was abolished in 1935, its former responsibilities were taken over by the Attorney General of Canada. The office was reestablished in 1945 and became a cabinet post. Sixty years later, the office of Solicitor General was abolished, when the office of Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness was created on April 4, 2005.
