Kriging is a geostatistical interpolation technique that considers both the distance and the degree of variation between known data points when estimating values in unknown areas... Kriging is a multistep process. It starts with the exploratory statistical analysis of the data, variogram modeling, creation of the surface, and(optionally) exploration of a variance surface. The kriging method will be more successful when spatially correlated distance or directional bias is present in the data. 2, record 7, English, - kriging

The octanol-water partition coefficient is the ratio of the concentration of a chemical in octanol and in water at equilibrium and at a specified temperature. Octanol is an organic solvent that is used as a surrogate for natural organic matter. This parameter is used in many environmental studies to help determine the fate of chemicals in the environment. An example would be using the coefficient to predict the extent a contaminant will bioaccumulate in fish. The octanol-water partition coefficient has been correlated to water solubility; therefore, the water solubility of a substance can be used to estimate its octanol-water partition coefficient. 11, record 17, English, - octanol%2Dwater%20partition%20coefficient

Using an existing navigation system, such as the Global Positioning System(GPS), the aircraft's position is correlated with a database-driven terrain map which provides the pilot with real time awareness of the aircraft's position. The moving map, which is displayed on a cockpit screen, will aid the pilot in maintaining proper altitude and terrain clearance. 3, record 18, English, - enhanced%20ground%20proximity%20warning%20system

4, record 21, French, - indice%20de%20rendu%20des%20couleurs

Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution. 3, record 23, English, - scanning%20transmission%20electron%20microscopy

An informative way of looking at this is to describe how species abundance varies temporally and spatially and then to identify the mechanisms that can cause synchrony.... Acid catalysts are employed in such diverse areas as Friedel-Crafts reactions(qv) and reactions in the presence of clays. The isomerization of n-butane over an aluminum halide-hydrogen catalyst takes place only in the presence of olefins. Friedel-Crafts catalysts, mineral acids... all act in a similar manner because of their essential acidity. In each case the active catalyst contains a proton; it is a Brönsted acid.... Catalytic activity of acid catalysts is correlated with surface acidity for different reactions. The Brönsted acidity is necessary for successful catalytic cracking, and the distribution of acid strengths is important. 2, record 34, English, - acid%20catalyst

Because Canada is a large producer and net exporter of resource-based goods, the Canadian dollar is often referred to as a commodity-based currency. In other words, the value of the Canadian dollar is correlated to the strength of world commodity prices. When world commodity prices are high, then resource-based industries in Canada are more profitable, making the Canadian economy stronger and thus attracting investment and placing upward pressure on the Canadian dollar. When commodity prices fall, they undercut revenues for resource-based firms, eroding profits, dampening the domestic economy and pushing down the Canadian dollar. 1, record 35, English, - world%20commodity%20price

1, record 35, French, - cours%20mondial%20des%20produits%20de%20base

Neutron coincidence counting. There is an important difference between the distribution in time of neutrons from an([alpha], n) source and from a spontaneous fission source. The neutrons from an([alpha], n) source are emitted at random times, unrelated to each other, whereas neutrons from spontaneous fission sources are emitted in small, time correlated groups. The size of these groups is determined by the neutron leakage multiplication. The technique of neutron coincidence counting can detect the existence, or absence, of these groups and thus establish the presence, or absence, of a spontaneous fission source. 1, record 37, English, - neutron%20coincidence%20counting

1, record 37, French, - comptage%20neutronique%20en%20co%C3%AFncidence

Surface hardness studies have previously been performed by the authors on natural grass and AstroTurf. A study of football shoe flexibility is presented and the results correlated with the occurrence of stiff conventional seven posted football shoes or the more flexible soccer style shoe on natural grass fields. Supercritical fluid technology is based on properties of compounds when they are placed under pressure and temperature conditions beyond their critical point. Supercritical fluids have a viscosity close to gases, a density close to liquids, and a high diffusivity. The state changes gaseous/supercritical and liquid/supercritical occur in a continuous way. Supercritical fluids have then a tunable solvent power : solubility of compounds in the fluid is correlated to pressure and temperature. Several supercritical fluids have been studied, including propane and water, but the most widely used is supercritical CO2. 2, record 46, English, - supercritical

5, record 51, French, - pourcentage%20d%27azote%20non%20prot%C3%A9ique

Knowing plant water status is useful, but to appreciate how the plant responds to drought we should also monitor some process within the plant. Given that most water is lost from the plant when it opens stomatal pores to photosynthesize, we might hypothesise that stomatal opening is somehow correlated with plant water status. The degree of stomatal opening can be measured with a diffusion porometer. As the name implies, the diffusion porometer measures the rate at which water vapour diffuses out of the leaf, mainly through stomatal pores. The greater the number of these pores and the wider their apertures, the faster will be the rate of water vapour diffusion for given conditions. By measuring this rate of diffusion and knowing the conditions which are driving it, we can calculate stomatal resistance to diffusion of water vapour(or its reciprocal, stomatal conductance). 2, record 59, English, - porometer

ISTOP stands for Integrated Satellite Tracking of Polluters, and employs daily satellite photos in which oil slicks can be identified. These can then be confirmed by over-flights of the area, and then samples can be taken. Vessel images in photos can be correlated with vessel transits based on AIS data. RADARSAT 2, which will be operable in 2005, will be able to define the shapes of vessels. As developed for Eastern Canada, the program involves coordination of existing activities by such federal agencies as the Canadian Coast Guard, Transport Canada, Environment Canada, and Defense. If the radar operator reports an image on the daily scan that looks like oil, then over-flights can be mobilized within an hour. This program is also used in Sweden and Denmark. 3, record 60, English, - integrated%20satellite%20tracking%20of%20polluters

1, record 71, French, - quantification%20angulaire

"An open space index should include both a listing of open space parcels and a map indicating where they are located. It can be part of an environmental resource inventory(see chapter 5) or developed independently. An open space index is useful, for example, when it is correlated with identified natural resources or unique natural areas to assist in determining which parcels, or portions of parcels, should be protected.
