DEF

A range of values below and above the point estimate that has a given probability of including the true value of a given parameter, such as a treatment effect.

OBS

The confidence interval is the area of uncertainty for the estimating of a parameter. The use of this interval reflects the fact that a study provides one estimate of a parameter, out of the many estimates that would be possible if the study were repeated several times. If an X% CI is constructed for each repetition, X% of the intervals will contain the true value of the parameter. Investigators typically use confidence intervals of 90%, 95% or 99%. Thus, a 95% confidence interval indicates that there is a 95% probability that the confidence interval calculated from a particular study includes the true value of the parameter. If the interval includes a null value(a difference in means of 0, an odds ratio or a relative risk of 1, or a correlation coefficient of 0, for example), the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. A narrow confidence interval around a point estimate indicates a more precise estimate than a wide confidence interval.

OBS

The validity of the confidence interval depends upon knowledge of the underlying distribution of the population or assumptions about behavior of the sampling distribution.

OBS

DEF

CONT

The sodium adsorption ratio(SAR) is used to estimate what the exchangeable sodium percentage of a soil is, or what it is likely to become, if the water that comprises the sampled soil water is used for irrigation for long periods of time. The reason for using the SAR is that it has a good correlation to the exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP) and is much easier to calculate exactly or to estimate from a few simple analyses than is the ESP.

CONT

Planimetric control. Segmentation is sometimes a ground step for correlation which approximates regions by plans, thus we have studied a way to control in 2D the planimetric differences between a reference and a segmentation outline. Various distances have been used for this purpose : Haussdorf distance from segmentation boundaries to reference ones seem to be the most appropriate. A recovering surface quality estimator has been tried and we have computed the ratio between intersection and union with respect to the both areas. This method will be used on many test sites.

DEF

A measure of correlation, symbolized by the coefficient eta ..., used when the relationship between two variables is curvilinear (nonlinear) rather that linear.

OBS

The correlation ratio may be used for any pattern of curvilinear relationship, and it may be used not only for the association of two quantitative variables, as in the case for most measures of correlation, but also when one variable is quantitative and one is qualitative.
