Improving the environment and creating a green and blue corridor is one of the main objectives in restoring the [Wilts and Berks Canal]. Creating wetland habitat for endangered species such as the water vole is very important but just as crucial is making a corridor where species can move from one habitat to another along the margins and hedgerows. 4, record 1, English, - green%20and%20blue%20corridor

4, record 1, French, - trame%20verte%20et%20bleue

The objective of a green corridor is always to link important natural areas in a city using a strip or corridor characterised by rich vegetation.... The benefits of green corridors are various, of course : increased biodiversity, promotion of non-polluting mobility, reduced air/noise pollution, helping prevent heat islands, and better water retention. They also generate social, cultural and economic benefits. 2, record 2, English, - green%20corridor
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Green corridors slicing through an urban area are conspicuous. Such strips (1) subdivide the area, (2) block out the other side, (3) are filters for movement across, (4) are thin and dominated by edge species, (5) are likely to be seen or encountered, (6) may be appealing or dangerous, and (7) tend to channel movement along their length. Indeed, these characteristics lead to the five major ecological functions of corridors ...: conduit; barrier/filter; source; sink; and habitat. 3, record 2, English, - green%20corridor

Soil corridors. If there is not room above ground to implement a green corridor, UBC [University of British Columbia] could experiment with underground corridors that connect existing soft landscapes belowground. Assuming space is available below ground, then soil corridors could help conserve soil on campus and also may create more room for tree roots and mycorrhizal fungi to grow.... By proposing soil corridors as a method to increase ecological connectivity on campus, soils are more likely to be conserved if their importance for ecological connectivity and mycorrhizae is recognized and valued. 2, record 4, English, - soil%20corridor

... was officially established as a Canadian not-for-profit organization in 1998. The corporation's affiliation, central to the natural synergy of transportation and trade, was initiated in 1996 by way of an inter-provincial conference. Conference proceedings led to a 1997 federal transportation and trade potential. One of the study'stop recommendations was to implement a self-systaining organization to promote Canadian trade through this very capable route and from AsiaPacific markets. The study went on to say that greater awareness of the trade benefits for Canada by using both the north and south Western Canada Transportation Corridors must be undertaken as we enter the global millennium. Today the Northwest Corridor Development Corporation has a growing membership of private and public sector representatives, including utilities, transportation companies, manufacturers, labour groups, all three levels of government, and individuals. 2, record 23, English, - Northwest%20Corridor%20Development%20Corporation

One of the intended missions of the DRAC system is to immediately detect all presence or advancing infantry units or vehicles at a particular location or within a specific corridor in the command zone of the reconnaissance units, without having to deploy any ground sensors. Each system consists of two fixed-wing aerial vehicles from the Tracker series, interchangeable gyro-stabilised visible-spectrum and infrared payloads, a data link and a portable, multifunction, ruggedised ground station. The latter in turn comprises two sets of functions : for mission preparation and control and for payload operation respectively. The complete equipment is packed in a rucksack that can be easily transported and deployed by two men. This feature makes DRAC particularly suitable for use by paratroopers. 2, record 32, English, - DRAC%20system

Record number: 46, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Speed up effects: Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump, ... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working: the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect." So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 meters per second in a natural "tunnel". Placing a wind turbine in such a tunnel is one clever way of obtaining higher wind speeds than in the surrounding areas. 4, record 46, English, - tunnel%20effect

The Mixedwood Plains ecozone consists of the St. Lawrence River valley of Quebec and Ontario and the inter-Great Lakes region of southern Ontario. The ecozone is the most populated in Canada and the most intensely developed. ... The climate consists of warm summers and cool winters. Once heavily forested, the Mixedwood Plains ecozone contains the greatest variety of tree species in Canada, though only about 10% of the forests, mostly a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, remains. Though relatively small in land area, the ecozone is very important agriculturally. The fertile soils, warm growing season, abundant rainfall and gentle topography of rolling hills and level plains result in a very productive and varied agriculture. The ecozone contains the most productive soils in Canada. Dairy, beef, poultry and eggs, and grains and oilseeds are important agricultural commodities. Orchards, fruit and vegetable production and vineyards can also be found throughout the ecozone. 3, record 66, English, - mixedwood%20plains%20ecozone

2, record 66, French, - %C3%A9cozone%20des%20plaines%20%C3%A0%20for%C3%AAts%20mixtes

The space created between the two buildings is called a dogtrot. Serving as a means of aerial reconnaissance and surveillance rather like "an extended pair of binoculars", DRAC enables an operator to gather, display and process real-time images at a distance of up to 10 kilometres, by day or by night. The responsibility for developing and manufacturing the DRAC systems has been conferred on EADS, as overall prime contractor, working in partnership with SurveyCopter. 2, record 80, English, - DRAC%20system

Although the physical capability of the delivery point at Ehrenberg, AZ, could permit an estimated 1, 410 MMcf/d to be delivered, the intrastate system can receive only 1, 210 MMcf/d. 13 The California Energy Commission estimated that the imbalance at the northern corridor crossing(Needles/Topock) is about 350 Mmcf/d. 14. These two estimates for the separate State border crossings combined indicate a potential shortfall in receipt capacity of 550 MMcf/d along the Arizona border. 3, record 100, English, - receipt%20capacity

3, record 100, French, - capacit%C3%A9%20de%20r%C3%A9ception
