A technique employed to minimize the rate of electrochemical corrosion of large structures, such as floating vessels or oil drilling and production platforms, storage tanks, and pipelines. 2, record 1, English, - cathodic%20protection
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Cathodic protection involves the use of a galvanic or impressed direct electric current to render the pipeline cathodic, thus causing it to be a negative element in the circuit. 3, record 1, English, - cathodic%20protection
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
There are two methods of applying cathodic protection, active and passive. In either case the structure is regarded as the cathode in an electrolytic cell, the anode being an attached metal bar, bracelet or plate, and the electrolyte the separating medium. 2, record 1, English, - cathodic%20protection

A form of corrosion that is localised, as it does not spread laterally across an exposed surface rapidly, but that penetrates at 10 to 100 times the rate of general corrosion, usually at an angle of 90° to the surface. 4, record 2, English, - pitting
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Localized corrosion of passivated metals ... such as pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking ... is more dangerous and destructive due to its latent incubation and quick propagation ... Pitting is encountered most frequently in metallic materials of technological significance: [carbon,] low alloy and stainless steels, nickel base alloys, aluminum, titanium, copper, and many other metals and alloys ... 4, record 2, French, - corrosion%20par%20piq%C3%BBres
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS

For corroding solutions at 90°C, with solution pH values in the range between 5 and 9, the corrosion rate of the lead-iron phosphate nuclear waste glass is at least 102 to 103 times lower than the corrosion rate of a comparable borosilicate nuclear waste glass. 2, record 4, English, - lead%2Diron%20phosphate%20glass

The film-forming polymer product is the key ingredient in determining the seawater erosion behavior of self-polishing marine antifouling paints. Self-polishing behavior of the paints is achieved through the erosion process of the polymeric binder, enabling the release of incorporated biocides at a constant rate. These paints prevent the growth of marine life and subsequently minimize corrosion on the hulls of seagoing vessels. 2, record 5, English, - film%2Dforming%20polymer

Wet hydrogen sulfide attacks mild steels and forms iron sulfide(FeS) as a corrosion product. On new steel, this attack is very rapid, but as the iron sulfide forms, it provides a protective coating or scale and corrosion drops to a low rate. A thickness of metal can be specified as "corrosion allowance" and the remaining steel then becomes virtually immune to further corrosion. 1, record 17, English, - corrosion%20allowance

1, record 17, French, - corrosion%20admissible
