CONT

Denunciatory sentences convey a message of social disapprobation, with the will of society expressed through the severity of the legal punishment. The seriousness of the crime is central to denunciation; there is little need to denounce shoplifting(although there may be a need to prevent such behaviour) but great necessity to denounce the intentional taking of human life(hence the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment for murder).
