The job titles and duties assigned to this position vary depending on the police agency. In general, this position can be held by a civilian or a sworn police officer and includes the following duties : processing a crime scene for physical evidence(fingerprints, hair, fibres, fluids, etc.) ;documenting a crime scene(photography, video, sketching) ;collecting, preserving, processing physical evidence found at a crime scene, on suspects or during an autopsy(involves laboratory work) ;writing reports; providing testimony in court. Depending on the employer, this position can be highly specialized or limited to basic duties.

evidence technician; ET: In some police agencies, the evidence technician’s duties and responsibilities are much more limited than a CSI’s.
