Furthermore, these pro-social associations, in addition to influencing the "route" the young person takes, are also a source of learning. The associations teach individuals the "tricks of the trade" whether they be pro-social, for example how to study effectively. On the other hand, a young person who is surrounded by family members already well ensconced in a gang lifestyle, surrounded by poverty and unemployment, associating with friends who skip school and instead make money by drug running, is more likely to follow the illegitimate/criminal route characterizing the lifestyle of his or her close associates.

Gang activity does not have any territorial or ethnic boundaries. Criminal activity that accompanies some of the gangs can range from a territory as small as a single neighborhood block, to a highly mobile criminal operation that reaches across state borders. Gangs are now networking across the U. S. and internationally, no longer confining themselves to a single community as in the past.

Unlike these other gangs that engage in a wide variety of criminal offenses, crime in this type of group is narrowly focussed on a few offenses; the group comes to be characterized by the specialty. The Specialty gang tends to be small-usually fifty or fewer members-without any subgroups in most cases(there are exceptions). It probably has a history of less than ten years, but has developed a well-defined territory. Its territory may be either residential or based on the opportunities, for the particular form of crime in which it specializes.

CONT
