Open-channel flow, or gravity flow, occurs when the water surface is at atmospheric pressure, which creates a free surface. ... Open-channel flow, however, is more complex than closed-conduit flow since the cross-sectional flow area is not constant.

DEF

An approach to problem analysis which weighs risks in a situation by introducing probabilities to give a more accurate assessment of the risks involved.

CONT

In probability analysis a specific probability distribution is assigned to each variable selected within the sensitivity analysis step. Risk analysis exploits Monte Carlo simulation techniques to aggregate the probabilities assigned to the critical variables. In choosing the level of aggregation of the possibly critical variables within the sensitivity analysis, the literature suggests focusing on low-level quantities that compose the grand categories of cash flow.

OBS

risk analysis: Not to be confused with sensitivity analysis.

OBS

The result is most commonly reported in the form of a cumulative probability curve plotted on a graph, in which the vertical axis represents the probability that a measure of project worth will fall below a stated value, and the horizontal axis represents the values of the measure of project worth.

Type of chromatography developed following the observation that certain proteins were unexpectedly retained on affinity gels containing hydrophobic spacer arms. This concept was extended, and families of hydrophobic adsorbents prepared using a homologous series of hydrocarbon chains of different lengths. In practice most proteins can be satisfactorily purified using C-8 or phenyl substituents. Hydrophobic interactions are strongest at high ionic strength, so adsorption to a hydrophobic matrix can be conveniently performed after a salt precipitation or ion exchange chromatography step. Elution can be effected by altering the solvent ionic strength, pH, or composition or by the use of a dielectric constant modifier such as ethanediol.

CONT

When carrying out the hydrophobic chromatography of human urokinase..., the solution containing the crude urokinase which is prepared from human urine in the usual simple method, is adjusted to a salt concentration of 0. 2 to 2 M, preferably 0. 2 to 1 M. The solution is then made to flow through the hydrophobic column packed with the protein adsorbent of this process.... The pH is not critical when carrying out the hydrophobic chromatography, however, the pH is usually adjusted to pH 5. 5 to 10, preferably 6 to 8. 5 at which pH urokinase is stable against inactivation. Purified urokinase can be obtained by treating the effluent from the hydrophobic column in a usual method, namely by lyophilization after desalting.

Another important type of non-Newtonian fluid is a viscoplastic or "yield stress" fluid. This is a fluid which will not flow when only a small shear stress is applied. The shear stress must exceed a critical value known as the yield stress... for the fluid to flow. For example, when you open a tube of toothpaste, it would be good if the paste does not flow at the slightest amount of shear stress. We need to apply an adequate force before the toothpaste will start flowing. So, viscoplastic fluids behave like solids when the applied shear stress is less than the yield stress. Once it exceeds the yield stress, the viscoplastic fluid will flow just like a fluid. Bingham plastics are a special class of viscoplastic fluids that exhibit a linear behavior of shear stress against shear rate.... Examples of viscoplastic fluids are drilling mud, nuclear fuel slurries, mayonnaise, toothpaste, and blood.

The autumn acidic pulses have apparently been amplified by drought conditions, for the acidic pulse of this autumn (1983) coincided with widespread yellowing (chlorosis) of the spruce foliage at Solling, the Harz Mountains, and elsewhere.

CONT

When the snowpack melts in the spring, the accumulated acids from both sulphates and nitrates flow into rivers and lakes. This surge of acidity is known as "spring shock" and, because it occurs at the most critical stage in the life cycle of many aquatic species, can kill fish eggs and fry(newly-hatched fish).

OBS

As a black region forms, sometimes thin rivers of black will flow into the coloured area of the film. Critical fall, as this is known, usually happens with soap solution having more than 4% of surfactants. What causes critical fall? First, an island of thicker silver-white film is caught in the thinner black film....

A calibrated device developed by Parshall for measuring the flow of liquid in an open conduit. It consists essentially of a contracting length, a throat, and an expanding length. At the throat is a sill over which the flow passes at Belanger's critical depth. The upper and lower heads are each measured at a definite distance from the sill.

Critical lip pressure method... If hot water or a water/steam mixture is discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe, and if the pressure is measured at the discharge lip of the pipe, this pressure is a measure of the heat flow of the discharged fluid. James has deduced... [a] formula expressed in f. p. s. units... Where the two phases of a water/steam mixture are segregated by means of a cyclone separator the water can be measured either by a cooled orifice or, after allowing for the flashed steam, by means of a V-notch or weir. Alternatively, however, the water may simply be discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe and measured by applying... [James] formula. By measuring the temperature of the water leaving the separator its enthalpy is made known, and... [the flow] can be deduced from... [the critical lip pressure].
