L'action thermique du relief crée un régime de vent particulier à la vallée : brises de pente, brises de vallée. La brise de pente est due à la différence de température entre le sol incliné d'un relief quelconque et l'air libre au même niveau. Sous l'influence du rayonnement solaire, le sol se réchauffe plus vite que l'air libre durant le jour. L'air, qui se trouve directement au contact du sol, tend donc à s'élever le long de la pente tandis que l'air libre s'affaisse : c'est la brise montante. La nuit au contraire, le sol refroidit par rayonnement l'air qui se trouve en contact avec lui. Cet air devenu plus lourd s'écoule le long de la pente : c'est la brise descendante.
