A thin layer of new concrete (2-4 inches), usually high strength and fiber-reinforced, placed over a prepared surface of distressed asphalt.

CONT

The white-topping construction process consists of four steps : 1) coring the existing asphalt to determine its depth, type and condition, 2) preparing the road surface by water or abrasive blasting, or milling and cleaning, 3) placing the concrete, and 4) finishing and texturing the surface, and curing and sawing its joints. The proper joint spacing is critical to control cracking of the concrete surface.

Recouvrement ultramince en béton. C'est une technique d'entretien et de remise en état des chaussées selon laquelle une couche de béton de 50 mm à 100 mm d'épaisseur est collée sur le revêtement en asphalte sous-jacent. La technique a vu le jour aux États-Unis, plus précisément à Louisville au Kentucky, en 1991. Depuis lors, de nombreux organismes au Canada et aux États-Unis y ont recours pour la réfection des chaussées. Au Canada, on s'en est servi pour la première fois en 1995.

OBS

Le recouvrement mince en béton (whitetopping) était une technique couramment utilisée de remise en état des chaussées dégradées. Au début des années 1990, par contre, une autre méthode a été développée, faisant intervenir la pose d'une couche de béton relativement mince (5 à 10 cm ou ultrathin whitetopping), collée sur le support bitumineux sous-jacent, créant ainsi une structure composite du béton et garantit la durabilité de la nouvelle structure.

In practice, the smallest spacing permitted is equivalent to the braking distance, calculated as a function of braking capacity, response time, length of track section, and, if applicable, total length of powered sections, a critical parameter in the control of electrical demand.
