The larval stage bottleneck can occur over a short "critical period"... due to starvation following yolk absorption, or over a more protracted period from hatch to metamorphosis. … While the positive link found in all taxa between feeding success and growth supports the current larval growth-survival paradigm, the much stronger association between these vital rates combined to the higher growth serial correlation in fast-growing species indicate that the potential for a "critical period" during the first-feeding stage could be [highest] in fast-growing fish... 1, record 2, English, - first%20feeding%20stage

Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. ... is a $10 million private sector fundraising campaign to provide the World Wildlife Fund with extra muscle and better tools to make real gains in the conservation of Canada's natural heritage. One hundred percent of the funds raised will be spent directly on conservation programs to accomplish very ambitious year 2000 goals. This critical financial support will enable World Wildlife Fund to save endangered ecological areas, implement recovery plans for Canadian endangered species, and make progress in reducing toxic pollution of our air and water. The symbol of The Nature of Tomorrow Campaign is a vibrant flower and child's hand, underlining the fact that our children's future depends upon the actions and decisions we take today.

2, record 12, French, - extinction
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 2 OBS

To be useful as an operational guide, social scoping is often cast in terms of the plant or animal species perceived by society to be important. Thus, among other more ecological criteria, Carins(1975) used commercial, recreational or aesthetic values as some of the bases for establishing a list of critical species. Similarly, Trutt(1978) established the focus for a major impact research programme on ’key species’ which were defined on the basis of abundance, and commercial, recreational and food value to man. 1, record 28, English, - critical%20species

When the snowpack melts in the spring, the accumulated acids from both sulphates and nitrates flow into rivers and lakes. This surge of acidity is known as "spring shock" and, because it occurs at the most critical stage in the life cycle of many aquatic species, can kill fish eggs and fry(newly-hatched fish). This highly acidic water may also damage ecosystems by killing the eggs of amphibians such as frogs and salamanders laid in spring melt pools. 1, record 31, English, - highly%20acidic%20water

Nitrates deposited during the winter months are of particular concern. They accumulate in the snow-pack and when the snow melts in the spring the accumulated acid is released into lakes, rivers and streams, all at once.
