De plus, lorsque l'angle d'incidence du rayon lumineux est plus grand que l'angle critique, la lumière est réfléchie en totalité et il n'y a aucune perte de lumière. Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well. 3, record 11, English, - combustion%20override%20split%20production%20horizontal%20well%20process

2, record 11, French, - combustion%20in%20situ%20avec%20puits%20de%20production%20horizontal

Polishing and planarization are related in that polishing improves the flatness(planarity), smoothness and optical properties of a surface. Planarization, however, is a much more critical process. Integrated circuit(IC) manufacturers must planarize each surface layer of an in-process wafer to make it level for the next application of microlithography. Chemical mechanical planarization(CMP) is used during the semiconductor manufacturing process to planarize individual layers in complex integrated circuits to customer-specific parameters. 2, record 14, English, - chemical%20mechanical%20planarization

Even the seemingly small level of disagreement between surface and deep layer temperature trends can not be reproduced by current GCMís, which slave globally-averaged deep tropospheric temperatures to any surface temperature fluctuations... However, we know that convective air currents and the air-conditioning effects of water cause the atmospheric temperature profile to change by a much larger amount, about 80 deg. C, between the surface and 10 km altitude when compared to a hypothetical Earth without these processes... Thus, it is critical to validate whether the parameterizations of moist convective processes in GCMís are realistic enough to capture the ways in which the tropospheric temperature profile fluctuates naturally in response to this transport of heat from the surface to the upper troposphere. 1, record 15, English, - tropospheric%20temperature%20profile

The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station(ISS) ;in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair(submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous(e. g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments :critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy(BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization(BCAT-3-SC) and critical point(BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT-3 and 4 :Critical Point(BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4 : Polydisperse(BCAT-4-Poly).... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3(BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles(tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes :critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization. 5, record 17, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

The trace element iron has been recently shown to play a critical role in nutrient utilization, phytoplankton growth and therefore the uptake of carbon dioxide from the surface waters of the global ocean. Carbon fixation in the surface waters, via phytoplankton growth, shifts the ocean/atmosphere exchange equilibrium for carbon dioxide. As a result, levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide(a greenhouse gas) and iron flux to the oceans have been linked to climate change(glacial to interglacial transitions). These recent findings have led some to suggest that large scale iron fertilization of the world's oceans may therefore be a feasible strategy for controlling climate. 2, record 20, English, - iron%20fertilization

Eccentricity is a measure of the circularity of the Earth’s orbit around the sun. This varies from almost circular to more elliptical. The end effect is to change the distance of the sun to the earth in winter and summer (on average, the distance must remain constant). Today, the orbit is nearly circular, so that the northern hemisphere receives about the same amount of radiation in winter as in summer. In the past the orbit was more elliptical, so that there was a greater difference in summer insolation between the hemispheres. Overall, the variations in insolation are small. 3, record 22, English, - summer%20insolation

Low summer insolation is the critical factor that cools the climate enough to allow snow and ice to persist from one winter to the next.... If summer insolation is strong, more radiation is absorbed at Earth's surface at high latitudes. A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range. 2, record 26, English, - colloid%20chemistry

An asphalt distributor will spread a coating of asphalt over the surface, which is followed by a chipspreader placing the layer of rock. This rock is then rolled into place with a roller. This process should take about 20 minutes at any one location. No traffic is allowed on the liquid asphalt, and traffic on the unrolled rock will be limited to critical traffic only. After rolling, the road will be reopened to light, slow moving traffic. There are small surface rocks that will roll off into the gutter. This is also normal, and city crews will sweep up the excess aggregate within 24 to 48 hours. 2, record 30, French, - granulats%20en%20exc%C3%A8s

While much emphasis has been placed on reducing sulphur dioxide emissions, NOx emissions must also viewed with concern due to their contribution to the pH depression associated with the snowpack melt episodes. This depression, when imposed on the surface waters where the acidity has already been increased due to excess sulphates, results in levels of acidity that may be critical and occur at sensitive life stages of many aquatic organisms, even though the long-term average acidity may be tolerated by a normal biological habitat. 1, record 38, English, - long%2Dterm%20average%20acidity
