CRITICAL VOLTAGE [8 records]

Record 1 2017-12-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Exhaust Systems (Motor Vehicles)
  • Anti-pollution Measures
CONT

The oxygen sensor(also known as an O2 sensor, lambda sensor, or EGO sensor) is one of the most critical sensors on a fuel-injected engine. It resembles a spark plug and is located in the exhaust manifold between the turbo and catalytic converter. When at operating temperature it becomes a miniature battery which generates a voltage based on the differential between the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and the oxygen content of the ambient air. By this method it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, allowing the ECM to compensate to some degree for various fuel grades, engine wear, altitude changes, usage of oxygenated fuel, and more. Another big benefit is the ability to keep emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and unburned hydrocarbons as low as possible.

OBS

oxygen sensor: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

Domaine(s)
  • Échappement (Véhicules automobiles)
  • Mesures antipollution
CONT

DEF

A current-controlling resistance device designed to maintain a substantially constant current over a specified range of variations in the applied voltage to a series circuit.

CONT

A ballast tube is essentially a constant-current device. It is a resistor whose resistance, at a certain critical temperature, varies with temperature so rapidity that, as the voltage across the tube varies, the current remains practically constant.

  • Electromagnetic Radiation
DEF

A thin insulator separating two superconducting materials; it displays the Josephson effect.

CONT

A Superconducting Tunnel Junction(STJ-or Josephson junction) consists of two thin films of a superconducting metal such as niobium, tantalum or hafnium separated by a thin insulating layer. When operated at temperatures well below the superconductor's critical temperature(typically below 1 K), the equilibrium state of the junction is easily perturbed by any photon striking it. By applying a small bias voltage across the junction and a suitable parallel magnetic field to suppress the Josephson current, an electrical charge proportional to the energy of the perturbing photon can be extracted from the device.
