Subject field(s)
  • Crop Protection

The depth of mixing is critical. If herbicides requiring shallow incorporation are placed too deep, they may lose some of their effect by dilution in a greater volume of soil.

OBS

incorporate: to mix or blend a herbicide into the soil.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Protection des végétaux
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
CONT

Forward curved blade fans. Forward curved blades... are mounted on what is often referred to as a squirrel cage rotor. Fans with these blades produce a high volume for their size, and are lightweight and economical. Because forward curved blades can collect deposits they are only used for handling clean air. Forward curved blade fans are used extensively in small air handling equipment(less than 610 mm diameter). Their efficiency is lower than that of airfoil fans. The scroll is often similar to other centrifugal fan designs, however, the clearance between the impeller and inlet is not as critical as for airfoil or backward inclined blade impellers.

Subject field(s)
  • Weapon Systems
  • CBRNE Weapons
DEF

A device in which a quantity of fissionable material, less than a critical mass, has its volume suddenly decreased by compression, so that it becomes supercritical and an explosion can take place.

OBS

The compression is achieved by means of a spherical arrangement of specially fabricated shapes of ordinary high explosive which produce an inwardly-directed implosion wave, the fissionable material being at the centre of the sphere.

OBS

implosion weapon: term and definition standardized by NATO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Systèmes d'armes
  • Armes CBRNE
DEF

CONT

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range.

OBS

Though the term is often used synonymously with surface chemistry, in a strict sense it is limited to the size range mentioned in at least one dimension, whereas surface chemistry is not.
