L’expérience montre que certains oxydes de métaux sont des colorants céramiques, c’est à dire que leur poudre mélangée à une pâte ou un émail apporte une couleur au produit cuit. Voici quelques exemples des oxydes les plus courants et les couleurs qu’ils donnent à un émail cuit en oxydation : cobalt (bleu), cuivre (vert, bleu), manganèse (brun, violet), fer (jaunâtre, rougeâtre, verdâtre), chrome (vert, jaune, rouge), nickel (brun, verdâtre, gris), et il en existe d’autres (uranium, titane, vanadium,… ). […] Lorsque la quantité d’oxyde ajouté à l’émail est trop élevée, on peut obtenir des teintes nouvelles, par exemples, des teintes métallisées, par saturation. La température et l’atmosphère (réduction ou oxydation) de cuisson ont une influence sur la couleur donnée par un oxyde.
