CONT

Crop-yield weather modelling refers to the techniques [that] can be used operationally to determine the likely effect of weather on yields. Although the incidence of weather conditions on yields is well established, its quantitative assessment is not always straightforward : time series analyses of agricultural statistics show that inter-annual variability... of crop yields can be roughly subdivided into [three] components :(i) trend,(ii) direct weather factors[, ] and(iii) indirect weather effects, pests, diseases, weed competition, etc.

Yield components of crops. The yield of a grain crop plant can be divided into various components which together contributed to the yield. These components include : Heads, ears or pods per acre... Number of kernels or seeds per head, ear or pod... Weight per kernel or seed... Any crop production factor which decreases any one of these factors results in decreased yield.... Full yield potential is almost never achieved because environmental conditions may limit one or more of the yield components during the growing season.

From early April mature black fruiting bodies(perithecia) can be found in the gray affected areas of cane tissue. Integrated Pest Management.

OBS

It should be emphasized that the integration of herbicides into the crop protection program or system needs careful consideration. Main factors to be considered are the rotation sequence, the most common weed or complexes of weeds in the field, and their density and duration. Effort should be made in choosing and matching the particular herbicide(s) with the specific weed species or complexes of weeds present, the geographic location, and edaphic and environmental conditions. Many combinations of herbicides result in either additive or synergistic effects on weeds. The activity of soil-acting herbicides depends on such factors as persistence, absorption properties of the soil, soil organic matter, soil types, soil moisture, and cultivation. Herbicide rates may need to be adjusted on the basis of soil texture and type. As well as effects of soil on the performance of herbicides, there are converse effects of the herbicides on soil properties....

CONT

The experts agreed that there was no need for a new university discipline and that no one should be trained just as a "biotechnologist"; specific skills should be developed in an interdisciplinary context.

CONT

Biotechnologists must also overcome regulatory and social problems, like resolving the conditions under which genetically engineered crop plants or animals can be released into the environment.

OBS
