CROP LOSS [18 records]

Record 1 2025-03-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
CONT

Clean-tillage involves inverting the soil so that most of the residue is buried. Moldboard plowing followed by preplant disking is a common clean-till procedure. Because crop residue is mostly buried, the soil surface is exposed to wind and rain, increasing the potential for erosion and a loss of soil moisture. Of the tillage systems discussed, clean-tillage carries the greatest wind and water erosion risks. Clean-tillage is not considered a conservation tillage system.

CONT

Clean cultivation is common in grape culture and signs of surface erosion are prevalent in all vineyard fields. The effects of erosion are somewhat less severe on the soil areas above the escarpment since the slopes are shorter and less abrupt than on the bench sites.

Key term(s)
  • clean tillage

Domaine(s)
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
CONT

When synthetic fertilizer, manure and crop residue are added to cropland, a portion of the nitrogen from these sources is lost through leaching, erosion and runoff. The magnitude of this loss depends on a number of factors, such as application rate and method, crop type, soil texture, rainfall and landscape.

OBS

crop type: term standardized by Environment Canada and the Translation Bureau for use in the National Inventory Report.

CONT

Subject field(s)

CONT

A ram air turbine(RAT) is a small turbine and connected hydraulic pump, or electrical generator used as power source for aircraft. In some early aircraft, these were permanently mounted and were the aircraft's principal electrical power source. With the exception of crop dusters, modern aircraft only use RATs for emergency use-in case of the loss of both primary and auxiliary power sources the RAT will power vital systems(flight controls, linked hydraulics and also flight-critical instrumentation). Some RATs produce only hydraulic power, that is then used to power electrical Generators.

Tolerance against pod dehiscence (shattering) [of soybeans] after maturity is a trait that becomes increasingly important in the less-humid areas of the Prairie Provinces.

CONT

The lingonberry fruitworm is a small moth whose larvae borrow into and feed on lingonberry fruit. Feeding damage causes berry loss, but most of the problems are caused by the wthitish caterpillars emerging from the fruit after it is picked. This results in reduced marketability. There is increasing interest in domesticated lingonberry cultivars from the US and Europe, and several of these cultivars are now being tested here. To ensure industry growth the fruit must be free of insects and insect damage. With this research goal, the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre tested a monitoring system for the fruitworm using "pheromones".

OBS

The lingonberry, known locally as the partridgeberry, is a member of the cranberry family.
