CROSS BEARING [10 records]

Record 1 2017-10-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Combat Systems (Naval Forces)
OBS

A favourite manoeuvre in naval battle with fleets sailing in the normal battle disposition of line ahead. If a fleet in this disposition, either by a superiority of speed or by approaching at an angle, can cross ahead of the enemy's line approximately at right angles, it has a considerable tactical advantage in that all its guns can be fired on the broadside while the enemy can reply only with those guns which can fire ahead. It is also a tactical situation which forces an enemy to turn away, and in the resulting loss of speed during the turn and the difficulty of keeping guns bearing on an enemy while turning, the fleet "crossing the T" has a considerable gunnery advantage.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Systèmes de combat (Forces navales)
DEF

The meniscus is a half moon shaped piece of cartilage that lies between the weight bearing joint surfaces of the femur and the tibia. It is triangular in cross section and is attached to the lining of the knee joint along its periphery. There are two menisci in a normal knee; the outside one is called the lateral meniscus, the inner one the medial meniscus.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Components
  • Bearings and Bearing Systems (Mechanical Components)
OBS

To avoid cross location of the bearings the non-locating bearing, which provides only radial support, must be capable of accommodating the axial displacements which arise from the differential thermal expansion of the shaft and housings.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Composants mécaniques
  • Paliers, coussinets et roulements (Composants mécaniques)
OBS

Le palier libre n'assure que le guidage radial; il doit permettre un déplacement axial de façon à éviter un coincement des roulements (par suite d'une dilatation longitudinale de l'arbre par exemple).

Record 9 1981-02-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bearings and Bearing Systems (Mechanical Components)
OBS

The non-locating bearing can be displaced axially thus preventing cross location, e. g. by shaft expansion or contraction.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Paliers, coussinets et roulements (Composants mécaniques)
OBS

Les paliers «libres» permettent un déplacement axial relatif entre arbre et logements, de façon à éviter un coincement des roulements, si l'arbre se dilate longitudinalement par exemple.
