Record 1 2016-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Graphics
DEF

A simple closed curve in the plane, that is, a curve that is closed, connected, and does not cross itself.

PHR

Jordan’s closed curve.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mathématiques
  • Infographie
DEF

Record 2 2012-07-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Descriptive Geometry
CONT

A Möbius strip has a boundary which is a simple closed curve. It can be deformed into a circle, although in the process the strip must be allowed to intersect itself... The surface which results is a nonorientable surface called a cross-cap. It can be described as a hemisphere which has been pinched together along a short vertical line starting at the pole; the surface then appears to intersect along this line and the line is to be regarded as two lines, each belonging to one of the two parts of the surface which cross along the line.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géométrie descriptive
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
  • Scientific Instruments
DEF

The curve assumed by a perfectly inextensible cord of uniform density and cross section hanging freely from two fixed points.

DEF

The shape assumed by a perfectly flexible line hanging under its own weight.

  • Mathématiques
  • Instruments scientifiques
DEF

Record 4 2011-07-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Closing Devices and Nozzles (Mechanical Components)
CONT

The thermostatic charge is the constituents used in the sensing bulb. A ’cross charge’ indicates the ’bulb charge’ P-T curve crosses the P-T curve of the refrigerant used in the system. As a result, a ’cross charge’ doesn’t use the same refrigerant used in the system the valve is being applied.

OBS

Thermomostatic Expansion Valves ... Charges: Power elements may be system charged (charged with the same refrigerant used in the system) or cross charged (refrigerant different from that used in the system).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Obturateurs et buses (Composants mécaniques)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

Curve of distribution of measured point velocity usually over a vertical line in the cross section of a stream or current.

  • Handwriting Analysis and Cryptography
DEF

... all upwards strokes of the... lower extensions which curve and cross the... lower extension, forming loops.

CONT

The lower zone is the realm of the instincts, the biological and sex drives, and the material drives and desires. Included are the lower loops of the f, g, j, p, g, y, and z.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Graphologie et cryptographie
DEF

[...] Trait vertical [...] situé au-dessous de la ligne.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Handwriting Analysis and Cryptography
DEF

... all upwards strokes of the upper... extensions which curve and cross the upper... extension, forming loops.

CONT

Handwriting, as noted above, is divided into three zones - upper, middle, and lower. The upper zone, including the upper loop of the small letters b, d, f, h, k, l, and t, the i dots, and the t bars, contains the intellect, imagination, and spiritual interests. The i dots reveal a person’s attention to details, etc.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

  • Statistical Graphs and Diagrams
  • Saving and Consumption
OBS

By the arithmetic slope of the indifference curve, we mean this : To find the slope of the curve at, say, point B, take a ruler and place it so that it is just tangent to the curve at B--it touches the curve, but does not cross it either above or below B. Mark the points at which the ruler's edge crosses the two axes. The slope is the ratio of the distance cut off on the vertical axis to the distance cut off on the horizontal axis.
