  • Metal Forming
  • Strength of Materials
DEF

neutral fiber : A line of zero stress in cross section of a bent beam, separating the region of compressive stress from that of tensile stress.

Key term(s)
  • neutral plane

French

Domaine(s)
  • Formage des métaux
  • Résistance des matériaux
DEF

Ligne ou surface située à l'intérieur d'une pièce pliée ou cintrée, sur laquelle ne s'exerce aucune contrainte au cours du formage.

Record 2 2011-06-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Asbestos Mining
DEF

[A] fiber oriented more or less parallel to the vein wall [in an asbestiform vein].

CONT

Asbestos veins are normally characterized as being either "cross fibre," in which the chrysotile fibres are oriented at a high angle to the plane of the vein, or "slip fibre," in which the fibres generally parallel the vein.

OBS

As opposed to "cross fiber. "

PHR

Slip-fiber vein.

PHR

Slip fibre vein.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mines d'amiante
CONT

Record 3 2008-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Internet and Telematics
  • Telecommunications
DEF

Distribution system equipment used to terminate and administer communication circuits.

OBS

In a wire cross connect, jumper wires or patch cords are used to make circuit connections. In an optical cross connect, fiber patch cords are used. The cross connect is located in an equipment room, riser closet, or satellite closet.

Record 4 2007-08-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glass Fabrics
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

A glass co-fiber consisting of two glasses having different coefficients of thermal expansion which glasses are fused together along their lengths [during the fiberization process].

CONT

The term dual glass fiber as used herein means a glass fiber made from two or more glass compositions having different coefficients of expansion.... Ideally, a cross sectional view of the fiber would show one half of the fiber to be formed of a first glass composition, and the other half of the fiber to be formed of a second glass composition.

OBS

Since the glasses have different coefficients of thermal expansion, these co-fibers twist and bend when cooled during the fiberization process.

Key term(s)
  • biglass fiber
  • bi glass fiber

French

Domaine(s)
  • Verre textile
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
CONT

Composée de deux verres de formulations légèrement différentes, ne refroidissant pas à la même vitesse, la fibre biverre pour isolant s'enroule sur elle-même à la sortie des filières.

Key term(s)
  • fibre bi-verre

Record 5 2007-04-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
CONT

Some acrylic fabrics, particularly knits, approximate the hand of fine wool. Because of the composition and cross section of the fiber, fabrics made from acrylic have a high bulk to weight ratio.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
OBS

DEF

... fibers [which] are at right angles to the walls of the vein.

CONT

The fibrous form of serpentine, chrysotile, was deposited in fractures in the ultramafic rocks as cross fiber veins where the chrysotile fibers occur at a high angle to the vein walls, or as slip fiber veins where the fibers occur parallel to the vein walls.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Matrix fiber : A manufactured fiber that is essentially a physical combination or mixture of two or more chemically distinct constituents or components combined at or prior to the time of extrusion... which components if separately extruded would each fall within different definitions of textile fibers... Matrix-fibril fibers have the fibril constituent randomly arranged across the cross section of the matrix. When the fibril component is in high concentration it may actually form a fibrillar network in the matrix.
