CONT

The evolution of Canada's grain transportation system from the 23. 3-tonne shipment in 1876 to today's 28-million-tonne movement is a story tied directly to the development of Canada's railways. As soon as rail lines began to cross the Prairies, settlers poured into Western Canada to farm the vast prairie land construct primary elevators, build towns and begin to feed the people of the world.

CONT

Record 4 2006-05-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Optical Telecommunications
CONT

Optical burst switching is a promising hybrid approach between coarse grain optical circuit switching and fine grain optical packet switching. The benefit of optical burst switching(OBS) over conventional circuit switching is that there is no need to dedicate a wavelength for each end to end connection. In addition, optical burst switching is more viable than optical packet switching as the burst data does not need to be buffered or processed at the cross connect. This allows the strengths of optical switching technologies to be leveraged effectively and the problem of buffering in the optical domain to be circumvented.

CONT

Since 1911, when the variety OAC21 was licensed, six-rowed barleys have dominated malting barley production in Canada. Since 1929, most six-rowed varieties eligible for top grades of barley have been identified by a distinctive blue aleurone colour. With the exception of Gateway and Beacon, all licensed yellow-aleuroned six-rowed varieties have been inferior in malting quality and have been excluded from the Canada Western (C.W.) grades of barley.

CONT

Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, P. O. Box 3000, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada T1J 4B1. AC Harper is a six-row yellow aleurone, hulled, spring feed barley with smooth awns, suitable for the Canadian prairies. Ac Harper was developed from a cross between a scald resistant backcross line of Galt and BT364, which has high grain yield and strong straw. It has a combination of high yield potentiel, good resistance to lodging, short straw, and resistance to scald. AC Harper has improved kernel plumpness, protein content, and kernel colour compared to the feed check, Brier.

CONT

CONT

Tests and trials for ’AC Juniper’ were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Lacombe, Alberta in 1994 and 1995. The trials consisted of four replicated plots per variety with each plot containing four rows. Plot length was three metres.

CONT

Combining ability for grain yield, yield components, and several agronomic and qualitative traits, was studied in a seven-parent diallel cross. The 21 F SUB 1 hybrids and the seven parental cultivars were grown in replicated plot trials sown at normal seed density in three locations in the years 1992 and 1993. The effects of general combining ability(gca) were highly significant for all the traits measured with the exception of seeds per spikelet, while the specific combining ability(sca) effects were statistically significant for grain yield, plant height, heading time, for all the yield components, and for the Chopin alveographic parameters P and P/L ratio/(From an abstract found in Dialog).
