CROSS SECTION AREA [14 records]

Record 1 2024-08-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Conductors and Resistors
  • Electric Cables
  • Telephone Wires and Cables
OBS

When we evaluate the cross section of a cable or the nominal area, we are evaluating its electrical resistance, not measuring its actual cross-sectional area.... in practical wiring application, it is necessary to carefully evaluate whether the selection of cross-sectional area of electrical conductors meets the project requirements according to actual use needs.

OBS

cross-sectional area: standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments
  • Radiological Physics (Theory and Application)
CONT

The planar detector consists of a crystal of either rectangular or circular cross section and a sensitive thickness of 1-20 mm... The electric field is perpendicular to the cross-sectional area of the crystal. The crystal thickness is selected on the basis of the gamma-ray energy region relevant to the application of interest, with the small thicknesses optimum for low-energy measurements(for example in the L-x-ray region for special nuclear material). Planar detectors usually achieve the best energy resolution, because of their low capacitance; they are preferred for detailed spectroscopy, such as the analysis of the complex low-energy gamma-ray and x-ray spectra of uranium and plutonium.

OBS

Solid-state detectors are produced mainly in two configurations: planar and coaxial. These terms refer to the detector crystal shape and the manner in which it is wired into the detector circuit.

OBS

This truss segment, called "P1," is a 46-by-15 foot structure weighing about 32,000 pounds when fully outfitted and ready for launch.

CONT

The P1 Truss, the first port truss segment, was attached to the port side of the S0 truss ... The P1 Truss provides structural support for the Active Thermal Control System, Mobile Transporter and one Crew and Equipment Translation Aid cart. ... The P1 Truss also has mounts for cameras and lights, and antenna support equipment for both UHF [Ultra High Frequency] and S-band communications equipment. The S-band equipment is currently on the P6 Truss.

CONT

The main truss segments-S0, P1, S1, P3, and S3-were designed as rigid hexagonal sections; a six-point structure is more rigid than one with four points. The hexagonal cross section also maximizes the volume that can be used to load equipment onto the truss. A square will not use the available volume as well as a hexagon.... The truss segments are not regular hexagons; the sides are not equal in length. The segments are wider than they are tall to further exploit the Shuttle payload bay area...
