CROSS TREE [7 records]

Record 1 2024-05-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tunnels, Overpasses and Bridges
  • Environment
  • Road Safety
CONT

Squirrels mainly travel between the tree crowns. Wherever trees are too far apart, as is the case around roads, they venture onto the ground. As six roads cross through the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark, squirrels would end up as road kill victims. To put an end to this situation, six squirrel bridges were created in 2012. In places where several squirrels had been run over, rope bridges were created to give squirrels safe passage between the tree crowns on either side of the lane.

Record 2 2023-07-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Facilities and Equipment (Wood Industries)
  • Forestry Operations
DEF

A series of short skids laid parallel at regular intervals, used to support felled trees or logs while they are being sawed.

CONT

A bucking ladder... is of assistance when small stems are bucked at a landing. This ladder consists of a set of cross skids on which the tree lengths can be rolled. When you are cutting standard lengths, such as 4-or 5-foot bolts for pulpwood, you can place the skids exactly these distances apart.... The bucking ladder also eliminates the chance of sawing into the ground, and permits cutting conveniently at waist height.

CONT

This very rapid shift to abnormally small annual rings is widespread, substantial and sustained and appears to have important implications.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biologie végétale

English

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments
  • Silviculture
  • Forestry Operations
DEF

A specially graduated tape by means of which the diameter may be read directly when the tape is placed around the tree.

CONT

The diameter of a tree cross section may be obtained with a flexible tape by measuring the "circumference" of the tree and dividing by [pi]... The diameter tapes used by foresters, however, are graduated at intervals of(pi) units(inches or centimeter), thus permitting a direct reading of diameter.

OBS

In France, according to «La forêt», 1979, p. 468, tree diameter readings are most often obtained with tree calipers.

OBS

diameter tape: term standardized by CSA.
