CROSS-COURT [18 records]

Record 1 2012-05-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

Any shot which goes by (passes) an opponent who is close to the net. Usually refers to a shot hit with much pace, as opposed to a slice shot.

CONT

When Voinea drilled a passing shot near his body, Becker took a few menacing steps toward him.

CONT

Short points are usually going to be the essence in doubles where twice the number of players crowd the court, making rallies less likely and attempts at passes more likely to be foiled.

OBS

Not to be confused with "passing shot winner". A "passing shot" is a shot that a defensive player is forced to make in order to place the ball behind the opposing net player. Such a shot may or may not go over the net or may or may not land within the opposing court. Successful of not, the attempt is called a "passing shot". And only if it is successful, does one call it a "passing shot winner". Related term: placement (generic term for any type of shot that is hit to an open area of the court; usually refers to shots made without much pass). Related term: buggywhip shot.

OBS

The "passing shot" is also called a "pass shot".

PHR

accurate passing shot, backhand passing shot, blistering (forehand) passing shot, (angled/short) crosscourt passing shot, down-the-line passing shot, forehand passing shot, hard passing shot, slice backhand passing shot, soft passing shot, strong passing shot; passing shot lane.

PHR

to cut off a pass(ing shot), dare one's opponent to hit the passing shot, hit a passing shot, intercept a passing shot, overplay a passing shot, slam a(cross-court) passing shot.

DEF

PHR

coup de débordement brossé, coup de débordement rasé de frais, coup de débordement en slice; défier un coup de débordement (=force the passing shot, dare one's opponent to go for a passing shot), intercepter un coup de débordement, loger un coup de débordement (dans des trous de souris).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

CONT

Keeping your feet wide apart is an important key to maintaining good balance and positioning while moving from shot to shot.

DEF

Refers to a tennis shot made from the side of the tennis court and directed across the net near the edge of the court on the same side.

CONT

Strokes played approximately parallel with the sidelines are described as "down the line" as opposed to "cross-court".

OBS

Because of the length of this qualifier, "down-the-line" is more often than not used as a predicate, as in the phrase a "drop shot down-the-line". Furthermore, "up-the-line" is sometimes used synonymously with "down-the-line". It seems that it is merely a question of perspective; opposite of "crosscourt".

DEF

An offensive groundstroke where the tennis ball is propelled forcefully with either top spin or with a flat-faced racquet deep into an opponent’s court. Such a quick shot would barely clear the net.

OBS

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task. (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is often used as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke), or like English it can refer to any hard shot, whether on the backhand or forehand side.

CONT

... driven shots down the line can travel above head height at the net and still drop inside the base-line.

PHR

Angled, backhand, cross-court, deep, flat, forehand, hard, penetrating drive.

CONT

CONT

Revés liftado [...] Este golpe de ataque requiere perfecta coordinación.

CONT

OBS

Many purists have tried in vain to maintain the distinction between a "shot" and a "drive", the latter yielding a ball with a lot of pace while the former term being more generic, i.e., not necessarily a ball hit hard, but simply the result of the racquet making contact with the ball - a slice backhand or drop volley are both "shots" that require more touch than power. The term "drive" implies the use of power.
