An offensive groundstroke where the tennis ball is propelled forcefully with either top spin or with a flat-faced racquet deep into an opponent’s court. Such a quick shot would barely clear the net. 4, record 1, English, - drive
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task. (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is often used as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke), or like English it can refer to any hard shot, whether on the backhand or forehand side. 4, record 1, English, - drive

Record 2, Textual support, English
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Many purists have tried in vain to maintain the distinction between a "shot" and a "drive", the latter yielding a ball with a lot of pace while the former term being more generic, i.e., not necessarily a ball hit hard, but simply the result of the racquet making contact with the ball - a slice backhand or drop volley are both "shots" that require more touch than power. The term "drive" implies the use of power. 4, record 2, English, - cross%2Dcourt%20drive
