CROSS-FLOW [9 records]

Record 1 2017-02-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climate-Control Equipment (Motor Vehicles)
OBS

... the usual construction of a radiator is to have the water circulate from the top to the bottom, crossflow radiators are designed to have the coolant flow from one side to the other ...

OBS

cross-flow radiator : term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee(New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Système de conditionnement de l'air (Véhicules automobiles)
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
CONT

The cockpit management system (CMS) is the primary interface between the flight crew, the aircraft flight control systems and the avionics equipment suite. The CMS is a redundant design using dual components and data busses to provide system operation in the event of a failure.

CONT

The cockpit management system keeps the flight engineer and the rest of the crew aware of all the aircraft's systems... This system data [can be used] to make the proper decision on each particular aircraft discrepancy. Also, this data can be downloaded after the flight, so the aircrew and maintainers can get a good cross-flow on how the aircraft performed during the flight.

Subject field(s)
  • Industrial Techniques and Processes
  • Food Industries
OBS

Cross-flow : a mode of operation where the feed flows parallel to the membrane while the permeate has a transverse flow direction.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Techniques industrielles
  • Industrie de l'alimentation
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Research Experiments in Space
CONT

The Rocket Assembly/Checkout Facility... The facility consists of six contiguous laboratory modules subdivided into a storage area, a gray room area, and a clean room. The storage area houses spare instrument components and intermittently used ground support equipment. The gray room area contains facilities to clean components before they enter the clean room and equipment used to ship the instrument to WSMR [White Sands Mission Range]. The Class 100 cross-flow clean room is separated from the gray room by an air shower. The clean room contains three major stations : a clean bench for assembly of subsystems; a 12x14-ft optical bench for instrument assembly and electronic test of the instrument subsystems; and a vacuum chamber for vacuum focus and spectroradiometric calibration. The cryogenically pumped vacuum chamber is designed with a 30-cm diameter ultraviolet collimator at one end and a roll-off section that accommodates the entire flight instrument centered in the collimated beam at the other end.

CONT

Cross-flow membrane separation... part of the overall filtration universe, differs dramatically from traditional filtration methods... it is a tangential technique in which the infeed flows continuously over the membrane... there are always two liquid streams leaving the system : the permeate, or the portion of the infeed that passes through the membrane; and the retentate(or concentrate), or the portion that does not pass through the membrane.

DEF

Jet stream with less than synoptic dimensions.

CONT

Mesojet... typically may have an along-flow length scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers and a cross-flow length scale of 100 km. Mesojets differ from planetary-scale jets, which can have length scales of several thousand kilometers, and synoptic-scale jets, which may have length scales of 1000-2000 km and are commonly found in association with progressive synoptic-scale troughs and ridges. Larger mesojets may also sometimes be known as jet streaks. Mesojets can form adjacent to prominent orographic features in association with terrain-channeled flow. Mesojets are also seen in association with organized mesocale convective systems as typified by the evaporatively driven rear-inflow jet commonly found behind active squall lines lines. Mesojets may also be found in conjunction with prominent lower-tropospheric stable layers where the airflow can become decoupled from the planetary boundary layer, especially at night. An exceptionally well organized lower-tropospheric mesojet extending over hundreds of kilometers might be known as a low-level jet.
