A chemical compound that consists of two cysteine molecules joined by a disulphide bond. 10, record 4, English, - cystine
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Cystine, the oxidized form of cysteine, plays a special role in protein structure since its disulfide group serves as a covalent cross-link between two polypeptide chains or between two points in a single chain. Disulfide cross-links can be cleaved by the action of reducing agents, e. g., mercaptoethanol, which yields two molecules of cysteine from cystine. Cystine can also be oxidized by such agents as performic acid, to yield two molecules of cysteic acid. 11, record 4, English, - cystine

6, record 4, French, - cystine

Technique used to prepare an enzyme electrode which uses a magnetic enzyme-containing membrane. Decarboxylases(enzymes which release carbon dioxide from carboxylic acids) specific for the amino acids tyrosine, phenylalanine, and lysine are used to make enzyme electrodes specific for each of these amino acids. A decarboxylase is cross-linked with an inert protein such as albumin, and magnetic ferrite particles are entrapped within the membrane structure. Glutaraldehyde is used to cross-link the proteins. 2, record 5, English, - magnetic%20membrane%20technique

Mechanical properties of the membrane are similar to those of cellophane and the enzymic activity is stable for weeks. The presence of the magnetic particles makes it possible to attach the enzyme-containing membrane to a CO2-sensitive electrode bearing a cylinder magnet. The decarboxylase membrane is situated on the outer surface of the gas-permeable membrane. The same technique was used to prepare the first enzyme electrode using two different enzymes which react in a coupled sequence, with the second reaction providing a detectable species. 1, record 5, English, - magnetic%20membrane%20technique

Method of studying the active site of enzymes using a chemical inhibitor that has all the structural requirements of a good substrate. Hormone receptors can be identified by affinity labeling. The principle is to covalently cross-link a radioactively labeled hormone with its receptor, either by using a bifunctional reagent that reacts with both the hormone and the receptor or by modifying the hormone so that it is chemically reactive and will form a covalent bond when it binds in the active site of the receptor.... 2, record 8, English, - affinity%20labeling
