CROSS-SECTION DESIGN [6 records]

Record 1 2016-05-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ornamental Glassware
CONT

Making a murrina consists essentially in preparing a sheaf of multicolored glass rods, arranged so that its cross-section is according to a predetermined design. It is then heated and, when the melting point is reached, it is drawn out until the desired diameter is obtained. After cooling, the rod obtained in this way is cut up into small disks of variable thickness... whose section has the previously made design.

OBS

Since murrines are one of the typical products of Venetian handicraft, several authors use the Italian forms "murrina" (singular) and "murrine" (plural).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Verrerie d'art
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Surveys
DEF

[A] combination of a panel survey and a repeated panel or rotating panel survey.

CONT

Each wave of data collection includes the one fixed panel and a different cross-section sample. This approach is favoured when there is a “desire to make both cross-sectional and longitudinal estimates”... The split panel design also may address concerns that longitudinal samples are unable to “provide adequate cross-sectional estimates. ”

Record 3 2007-08-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

A type of dam whose arch design enables the overall cross-section to be reduced as water pressure on the face of the dam is transmitted to the abutments.

CONT

Examples of arch dams are the Boulder Dam, Colorado, and in the UK the Galloway hydroelectric scheme.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
DEF

[...] ouvrage à courbure convexe tournée vers l'amont, permettant d'obtenir un effet de voûte [...]

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Earthmoving
CONT

Calculations for cut and fill are often worked out by means of the... contour-planes method. A strict examination of existing grade and proposed grade for a project will indicate the specific cut or fill requirements of a given area of earthwork. Horizontal cross-section volumes are then calculated for each contour interval indicated on the plan. When taken together, these form the total cut or fill volume necessary for the design area.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Terrassement
CONT

Cubature des déblais. (...) Calcul sur le terrain. (...)

Record 5 1983-03-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Technical Surveys
OBS

The most commonly used terrain model inside the United States is the cross-section model in which terrain is represented by discrete elevation points taken along lines generally perpendicular to some horizontal alignment. The engineer must supply detailed data concerning the alignments, both horizontal and vertical, of the proposed roadway design.

Record 6 1981-01-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wastewater Treatment
CONT

If the installation includes fine screening equipment(mesh openings of 1 to 2 mm, for example), sand removal must be carried out as a preliminary operation to avoid damaging the woven screens. Designing the dimensions of grit removal equipment. Construction is generally of the rectangular channel type.... The transversal cross-section is a function of the desired horizontal flow-rate. The flow-rate selected will be greater than the critical particle entrainment speed VI if the design calls for hydraulic evacuation of the sand, or less than VI if bottom scrapers are provided.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux usées
CONT
