Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Physics
DEF

A geometry in which a material whose cross-section is to be measured is interposed between source and detector so that scattering as well as absorption in the material reduces the detection rate.

OBS

good geometry: term related to beam-attenuation measurements.

OBS

good geometry: term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique nucléaire
DEF

Géométrie dans laquelle la matière dont ont veut mesurer la section efficace est interposée entre la source et le détecteur de telle sorte que la diffusion aussi bien que l'absorption dans la matière réduit le taux de détection.

OBS

Record 4 2011-11-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Analytical Chemistry
OBS

A type of ionization detector that responds to the permanent gases. It consists of a small ionization chamber in which the carrier gas and solute are irradiated with electron from a β-ray emitter while a potential is applied across the cell. When solutes enter the chamber there is a current change arising from the change in total cross-section for ionization.

OBS

The carrier gas most commonly used is hydrogen but nitrogen and helium are also employed.

DEF

[A] family of related detectors [which] is based upon changes in the conductivity of electricity through gases arising as a result of the presence of charged particles and ions in the gas. These ions may be created by combustion(as in the flame ionization detector), transfer of energy(in the argon detector), or by ß ionization(in the cross-section and electron capture detectors).

OBS

The first detector of this series that was developed was the cross-section detector although the most widely used is the flame ionization detector. Their great popularity rests in their wide applicability and high sensitivity.

CONT

... the neutronic method for measuring the water content in soil ...

CONT

The neutron method of measuring soil water content uses the principle of neutron thermalization. When both hydrogen and oxygen are considered, water has a marked effect on slowing or thermalizing neutrons. Thermal neutron density is easily measured with a detector, if the capture cross-section remains constant then the thermal neutron density may be calibrated against water concentration on a volume basis.

CONT
