CROSS-STRATIFICATION [6 records]

CONT

Bedforms are structures that are moulded on beds where deposition is taking place. Current-produced bedforms are diverse, and are useful indicators of depositional processes. Most bedforms migrate over the sediment surface. As a result, sediments deposited by bedforms typically show cross-stratification.

CONT

There are three basic classes of "classic," unidirectional bedforms: ripples, dunes and antidunes ... However, moving sediment can generate a variety of different forms depending on the characteristics of the material and its substrate, which ultimately effect transport and bed morphology.

DEF

Apparent layering in some igneous rocks caused by structural features, esp. horizontal jointing, that have the appearance of stratification.

OBS

false stratification : An old term for cross-stratification... used by Lyell... The term is rarely used today.

CONT

DEF

Lamination, in sedimentary rocks, confined to single beds and inclined to the general stratification.

OBS

[This phenomenon is] caused by swift local currents, deltas, or swirling wind gusts, and especially characteristic of sandstones, both aqueous and eolian.

OBS

Many authors have used "cross-bedding" and "cross-lamination" as synonymous with "cross-stratification, "but it is proposed to restrict the terms cross-bedding and cross-lamination to a quantitative meaning depending on the thickness of the individual layers, or cross-strata. [Cross-stratification is considered to have two subdivisions :cross-bedding, in which the cross-strata are thicker than 1 cm, and cross-lamination, in which they are thinner than 1 cm. ]

In the sandstones, flat lamination and low-angle cross-stratification predominate and there are abundant wave-rippled surfaces, these are interpreted as shoreface and inner-shelf deposits.

DEF

Cross stratification dominated by concave-up strata deposited in swales...

CONT

Depending mainly on the relative importance of bed-form shifting vs. rate of aggradation, sets may be very restricted in lateral extent and show mainly concave-up laminae(most workers would probably call this swaly cross stratification), or they may be continuous over a greater lateral distance and show more convex-up laminae.

CONT

... the presence of occasional swaly cross-stratification suggests deposition above storm wave base, and pebbles again indicate the offshore transport of coarser foreshore sediment during storms.

OBS

[This is] similar to hummocky cross stratification, which is dominated by concave-up strata.
