CROSS-WORKING [2 records]

Record 1 2007-01-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Gemmology
  • Diamond Industry
CONT

Describe crossworking: a) establishes symmetrical crown and pavilion main facets to specific angles and indices b) consists of two steps: - blocking the diamond ... lapping the diamond ...

CONT

Polishing: Removing material from a diamond to form facets; done in stages; crossworking (to set main facets), brillianteering (to finish the diamond); also referred to as cutting, grinding, running and smoothing.

OBS

blocking :[The] process of placing the table, the first four facets on the crown, and the first four facets on the pavilion of a rough or prepared diamond. To a large extent, blocking determines the symmetry and weight of the polished diamond as well as its brilliance and dispersion. In stones under 50 points, the process is often combined with cross-working.

DEF

A round, cast-iron disc charged with diamond powder used to polish a diamond.

CONT

The same scaife is used for all of the steps of faceting and polishing. The coarsest abrasives are placed in the center and the abrasives become finer as they reach the outside edge. Brillianteering and polishing take place farther out on the scaife than blocking and cross-working.

OBS

lap: The rotary metal or wooden disc (sometimes surfaced with cloth or leather) used by lapidaries for polishing gemstones. For diamond polishing the lap is made of cast iron and is called a scaife or a mill.

DEF

OBS

Disque [...] tournant généralement horizontalement.
